There was this one time where I was on a school field trip and I found the Gravitation DVD!(Mind you, I've been searching for this anime for 2 years now!) Anyway, when I asked the price for it, the clerk and everyone at the store(it was a tiny store) just gawked at me! I know yaoi is meant to target females, but I was so embarrasssed that I just put the DVD back down and walked out.
Were those people just reacting that way because most gay things here in the West are generally targeted to men or what? (I might be wrong on my last statement there, but my English isn't that great so don't get offended; just correct me.) Oh, and can any of you guys give me advice on what I should do if this happens again? Thanks! |

I used to be embarassed when I would purchase shoujo anime such as Cardcaptor Sakura at stores like Sam Goody. Nowadays, I could care less what people think of me when I purchase particular anime. Most of the time, the cashier or seller won't even care and just ring up your order just like any other. I think once, someone might have smirked or laughed because of an unusual title I decided to purchase, but it didn't really bother me. You should just shrug it off and just buy what you like. It's not really a big deal that people seemed like they were staring at you, just ignore them.
You could buy online if you want, but I don't prefer to do that because I like to examine my product in detail before I purchase it. I had a few slightly damaged items from some of my orders that really irked me. |

That's the way to do it. It's not like the people know you or you will run into them somewhere. I learned to not care long ago. And, like you said, most don't really care what you buy. Of course, you could always whip out the "It's my friend's birthday and this is what she wants" line if you are really embarrassed. |

It doesn't matter why they were acting that way. The clerk should have just told you what you wanted to know without acting like a jackass and making a scene. Unless it is a restricted product, which Gravitation is not, it's none of the clerk's business what one chooses to buy. You should not have put the DVD back. You should have sternly repeated yourself and suggest that he mind his manners. You could have also just asked to speak to the manager. |

I suggest buying a DVD of hardcore lesbian porn at the same time just to throw the clerk off. Then give me the DVD.

Don't worry about the clerk, kk. If I were you, I would've turned up the sassometer (it's us girls' toughest weapons  ) and made him (her?) regret ever saying anything in the first place. It sucks that you couldn't get a DVD you've looked so hard for, though. Next time you see it, go for it. Don't even care what other people think or say. And if they do choose to pick a fight, tell them bluntly that you are the target audience for that show, whether they think so or not. And to give you your damn movie before you ask to speak to the manager. That oughta do it. ...and maybe even get you a discount!

I think you're overreacting. How would the clerk know that it was a yaoi dvd just by the cover? Is he an anime fan? Did he watch the show himself? The cover doesn't suggest anything and you can't even tell it's a yaoi by it. Volume 4 is questionable, but even then the red head guy on the cover looks just like a girl and he looks like he's getting choke. Perhaps you're just being paranoia, and everyone was just surpise that you were buying a "cartoon" dvd. |

Perhaps... but like you guys said there really shouldn't have been any reason for the people to look at me like that. Besides, it was an anime store and those guys were buying animes themselves. That does it, I'm going to take you guys' advice and go to that store and buy Gravitation! *Storms out, but stops. ~Damn, I need a car. The store was in the city!* Oh, by the way, thanks for the advice!

I basically ignore anyone else that finds it strange when I'm buying an anime. Usually the clerks don't say anything but I have had a few give a strange look as they rang up the product. I also have a problem ordering thing online, I never trust that what I orderd will arrive in good condition so I just had to learn to get over any akwardness that may come from buying at the store.

Forget what those anime jerks think go buy your anime! there is nothing wrong with you liking Yaoi although its not my particular thing. Maybe they were suprised for some other reason...im not sure which but it had to probably been something else.

I don't think your re-action would get a second thought in an anime specialty shop. Buying any anime might get you a strange look if you manage to get a clerk who finds the thought of cartoons are made for kids, or that anime is made for perverts and weirdos. I either buy my anime from the net, or go to an Anime specialty store, even though anime (even Yaoi and Hentai) is fairly accepted here in San Francisco.

I suspect they weren't gawking at you because of what you wanted-they were probably gawking because they were lonely. If the store carries Yaoi then the employees can't really look down on you for buying it-after all, they're selling it! It's like clerks at liquor stores can't give temperance lectures.
