I've been putting off watching this until I had an entire weekend off of work and I could just knock this out in one day in a straight marathon, but as of last night some friends got me to cave in and I ended up watching the pilot. Needless to say, it is extremely clear why so many people like this show so much after I've continued to watch the first few episodes. The show has a clever, unique way of story-telling, a good sense of humor that isn't ever too much and the animation is (in my novice-anime opinion) excellent. The real thing that makes me like this show so far though is the fight styles, more specifically Mugen's fighting style.

I have no idea to find who I'm looking for, so I thought I would ask here: who is in charge of coordinating/drawing up the fighting scenes in this show? I'm not sure who I should be looking for in the credits, but I am definitely interested in looking up some of this artist's other works! I'm not looking for recommendations, I read the thread forbidding recommendations; I'm really just looking for the name of whoever would be in charge of coordinating these fight scenes and I'll do the work to find myself some other anime to watch.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this comes off as a recommendation thread, that is not the intent.

Going by what Ben Ettinger posted a while back on his Anipages blog, a number of the chambara scenes in Samurai Champloo were thanks to the Suzuki brothers, Takuya Suzuki and Tatsuya Suzuki. They were credited in over half of the episodes. Of course, they didn't animate every single one of those scenes. All the action scenes in ep. 15 are done Kazuto Nakazawa for example.

Given what I know of the production process, the choreography is usually up to the storyboarder. In TV anime, there are number of storyboarders over the course of a series and you can check out the ANN encyclopedia for who did what. However, I think Mugen's fighting style comes from Kazuto Nakazawa's influence as chief animation director of the series. You can see how he sets the tone with episode 1 (where he was animation director) and it stays consistent throughout the series. I know Watanabe storyboarded the first episode, but given what people who've worked with him have said, he's not exactly too great of a draftsman. So I wouldn't be surprised if he left the specifics of the choreography up to Nakazawa as he let Shinji Hashimoto rewrite his storyboard for Kid's Story.

So yeah, Kazuto Nakazawa.

EDIT: Rewatching the OP where they have both Japanese and English text. The English credits have Nakazawa has "Chief Animation Director", but the katakana has him listed as "Chief Animator". So going by the original JP credit I'm even more certain now that he's the guy behind the spirit of the nice fights in Champloo.

I really like this thread! Yes, Mugens' fighting style is unique and entertaining to watch. To me it looks a lot like break dancing...it sort of goes with the theme of the whole series: Urban/hip-hop.
