Character voice syndrome is when you're reading a manga, and for one reason or another you can't figure out what a character's voice is like, deteriorating the story for you. For me, one of the biggest problems I've had with this is Fruits Basket. It was pretty hard getting just the right pitch of Tohru's english dubbed voice into my head, and when I finally did, I was at the point where the manga goes further into the story than the anime, leaving me to have to make up the voices for the characters that weren't in the anime. This also happens with Naruto Shippuden trying to figure out the voices of some of the Akastuki members, and even more annoying, Suigetsu, Karin, and Juugo (should I have put that in a spoiler tag?). I imagine Suigetsu's voice like Shinji's from Bleach and Karin's like some women, I guess, but I still haven't figured out Juugo's. So annoying.

Somewhat. Though it usually happens pretty quick. Certainly if I like the anime voices, those pop right in. I guess an interesting example with Batman comics recently. Kevin Conroy has been in my head since seeing the series before really getting into the books. Of course now Bruce is dead and Dick is wearing the cowl. So I'm struggling to figure out how Dick's voice would mimic Bruce's.

i was mistakenly thinking that this was going to be like something i call "last song syndrome"-being the last song you heard, good or bad- getting stuck in a non-ending loop in your head until you hear something else. i thought this was going to be about having seen an anime series, then reading the manga, and automatically placing voice actor/actress with the character.
I can usually put a voice to a manga character, even if i haven't seen the anime...if it even has an anime. However, though i know Franken Fran has not come out as an anime-i doubt it ever would, though i'd love to see it, even though i dislike gore. i could deal with it though if FF ever did get animated. For some reason, the only voice i could put to the Fran character would be someone along the lines of (yeah, i've already dubbed it in my head) perhaps Maggie Flecknoe, since her voice as Ichijo in Pani Poni Dash is just deadpan enough to get the job done. Hmm, i wonder if i ever came across her at a 'Con, i could get her to say "Let's begin the operation!" |
