I'm really surprised that The second season of Higurashi no Naka Koroni was never picked up by Geneon when they picked up (even sponsored) the first season, or by funimation who bought it from them. I believe it was a moderate success, wasn't it? I remember the name popping up quite a bit a couple years ago. Also, the first season is largely 26 episodes of spoiler[unanswered questions]

Just an observation. I can imagine the American fans who picked it up, those who are either unfamiliar with Fansubs or those who can't or just won't download them being extremely frustrated by watching a series with spoiler[such an odd narrative structure and it only just starting to resolve itself before the end.] I actually wonder how that affected the ratings of that season on it's encyclopedia page.

Again, it's just an observation, not one of those "will anyone license Higurashi Kai" type threads.

we have kind of talked about this to death

Funimation could be trying to get the rights but the Japanese holders could be holding out because they don't like a series or title changing hands so much. Or it's just taking a while because of problems on Funimations end with the first season.

Even if it sold well it's all up to the Japanese holders for Higurashi if they want Funimation to pick up season 2 instead of the now fallen Geneon u.s.a branch. Which is most likely the problem.

Yeah, I had no idea about that.

What sort of problems arose on Funi's part with the end of the first season?

Popularity doesn't equate to profitability though. Geneon USA released tons of fan favourites that didn't sell well enough to justify the costs.

Assuming that there aren't any licensing issues at play, Funimation would have to carefully consider the risks since they'd need to dub the sequel themselves.

Geneon USA are done, they won't be licensing anything in their current state; they were just kept on life support long enough to complete what they had already started.
If FUNimation wanted to release any more Higurashi they would be doing it on their own and I don't think anyone outside of the industry fully understands the status of these Geneon titles post both the death of Geneon USA and the merger of their Japanese parents with Universal.
If there are no bars to FUNimation licensing it, then the problem comes down to whether they want to, which would depend on how well the first series did and the costs involved in dubbing it - especially if they wanted to keep the cast consistent since the first series was not dubbed by them or even in the same part of the country.
Sentai picking up the second Jigoku Shoujo series has shown there is an alternative however since they are clearly not adverse to taking on table scraps (Kodocha and Big Windup anyone?)

Yeah, I know Ganeon has been done. I just meant, I'm surprised they never picked it up when they picked up the first season, and that Funi never got it after taking it over from them.

Higurashi Kai didn't even start airing until four months after Geneon announced the license for season 1. And by that point, Geneon wasn't in a state to be picking up anything else. As for Funimation, it could be licensing issues with Geneon Japan / Universal, or it could be that they have the sales numbers from S1 and don't think S2 is worth it.

If Funi were to get S2, a complete recasting wouldn't be so bad. I didn't care for the Higurashi dub, I've seen widespread hatred for it elsewhere, and even Key's review of the last disc said it had declined in quality as the series went on. But as Shiroi Hane stated, the best chance we have to see Kai in R1 is probably a Sentai-type sub-only deal.

I'd actually be perfectly fine with that. I didn't hate or even dislike the dub for Higarashi, but it was... 'unimpressive' at best. And thus, I'd be perfectly fine with just being able to complete my collection of the franchise.

Yeah, it really did. Sad spoiler[The horror/suspense/mystery of the first series is gone and in its place is Groundhogs Day/Home Alone/Metal Gear Solid.] Lame.

Unless, and often even when, licensing a multi-series show after it has completed airing it is often the norm to pick up only the first series with an option on the rest.

I believe the post you were replying to was actually talking about the dub for the first series, not about the sequel's quality.

You're entitled to that opinion, of course, but I must disagree. The second series is an essential part of the story and builds upon what came before. It's not, predominantly speaking, something that comes out of nowhere. There is a shift in focus, admittedly, but it's not nearly as absolute as you're making it seem. Still, I won't elaborate further for the sake of not derailing this discussion too much.

With Sentai picking up Hell Girl season 2, it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to license Higurashi Kai either (heard the dub for the first season kinda sucks anyway).

I really hope they have picked-up the OVA's, too.
