I can't say I'm surprised. It's almost heartbreaking seeing the amount of stores Waldenbooks have closed in the Northeast PA area (1 in 2009 that closed very suddenly and 2 this year).
I hope they can pull out of this tailspin, because they are the only bookstore chain in the area, Barnes & Noble have only one store in our area (Wilkes-Barre). |

Waldenbooks has been going down for years now. As in... well over a decade.
Really, Amazon (and the internet in general) is eatting them alive. I don't see this trend reversing itself any time soon. |

I am just glad the Waldenbooks near were I live wasn't one of the ones that closed. It's the only bookstore around, well there is an independent bookstore one town over from me. If the Waldenbooks closes here I guess its Borders online I go.

Well for me as long as one Borders remain open where I live I'll be happy...
To clear things up... SF has four Borders! 4! And two of them are within walking distence of each other... Serouslly... They're less than 5 blocks away from each other... granted one of them is in a really nice mall and the other is at Union Square... Not that I'm complain or anything... But still I think it's kind of overkill... |

Just like supermarket/hypermarket chains already killed plenty or nearly all of small businesses. I'll at least side with Amazon on this one, since they are more of an agglomerate of stores, unlike chains. |

YAY!! the one by me is still open!!........the borders closest to me closed but not the Waldenbooks.....? Oh well at least it's better than Barns & Nobles

The one at Westfield and where else? I sometimes stop by after work, but I pretty much only buy stuff online... |

The other three are at Post and Powell (Opposite corner of Union Square), 3rd and King (Opposite corner of AT&T park) and Stonestown (at the Nordstorm end) |

I am not surprised at Borders being in trouble. I went into my local Borders at X-mas and was shocked by how empty the shelves were. They just are not stocking much. I don't even bother with their Manga section anymore and order from Amazon or Right Stuff. Their Fantasy section is dismal. I would not be surprised they go under eventually.
