I've noticed that Director, Script / Screenplay, Character Design, Art / Animation / Photography Directors are "primary staff" who appear in the upper part of staffs, while In-between Animation, Finishing, Color Design, and many other less prominent jobs appear in the lower part. However, while Original Creator / Manga are regarded as primary, Original Story is not, and Music and Producer are considered as secondary. I bet every fan of Hayao Miyazaki's movies knows Joe Hisaishi, who composed music scores for every Miyazaki's film, but I don't think many of them remember who the Director of Photography is.
So, just which jobs are "primary" and how were they decided? |

I did find it a little odd that "Music" isn't up with the main staff. It's a very important credit in my opinion.

Um, anybody else? Is there a chance to reconsider the relative positions of production staffs?

It seemed logical to make "music" one of the primary tasks, so I did that, and right after I discovered this: anime#49
*sigh* To answer the first question, I decided which tasks were primary by going through the submitted tasks and selecting the ones that appeared to indicate a "significant creative contribution" to the anime. But that was a long time ago, when the encyclopedia was much smaller and there were only a few hundred tasks, not a few thousand like now. |

Yeah, the Music task is too broad. Maybe, you could put up the Music Director and Music Producer tasks instead.

The problem is most anime do not have such staff position. The staff title "Music" is usually reserved for composer, not performing musician(s), with the exception of theme song, where the singer is more publicized than music and lyric composers. I think Neon Genesis Evangelion is a special case, and I assume all those musicians are part of a band or an orchestra. |

Well, not that I can really contribute, but I noticed a similar format for Evangelion's Music in Gungrave and Trigun, in case you were wondering if any other anime did this. But I think that's because Tsuneo Imahori does in fact have a band, of all whom I think are also associates of Yoko Kanno. I've seen some their names in the CD booklets for Cowboy Bebop, though Bebop's music credits aren't entered in that fashion. |

I noticed that ADR Director and ADR Script are both primary tasks (which is good, since they're very important positions in dubs), but a few tasks which usually mean the exact same thing in dubs are not. For some examples that I could find:
Voice Direction ADR Voice Director Script Adaptation Adaptation I'm a little hesitant to say these should be merged (with the possible exception of ADR Director and ADR Voice Director), since there can be some differences between the terms. For example, there are cases where the voice direction would not be ADR (some English-original anime, for instance). However, these tasks usually mean the same thing, or at the least, carry the same level of importance and should be primary. |

Another primary staff position is Series Composition (シリーズ構成, AKA Series Story Editor, Series Concept, Series Organization, Series Coordination, etc). It's the person who determines the overall plot of the (TV or long OVA) series. Its releation to episodic script/screenplay writer(s) is similar to
Chief/Series Director (総監督/監督) to (episode) Director (演出) or Chief Animation Director (総作画監督, AKA Chief Animator, General Animation Director, etc. Often also the Character Design) to (episode) Animation Director (作画監督) |

I just wanted to point out that this creates a little hiccup when it comes to English Staff. The Art Director is and should remain a primary staff position in the Japanese list. However, the Art Director in the English (or any language other than Japanese) isn't really that important. These credits are usually buried towards the end of the credits when they are reported. FUNimation usually doesn't credit this position, but ADV (goodnight, sweet prince) does. ADV usually credits the logo designer, packaging designer and menu designer after the art director, so this leads me to believe that the AD coordinates all these efforts and probably has some say in print advertising and DVD inserts and the like. Is there a way to make Art Director secondary for non-Japanese staff lists? (I always feel weird necro posting, but the Encyclopedia forum seems like the one place where it would be encouraged.) |
