Since I took Japanese courses (before I became borderline otaku), I can understand the structure and even pick up words when I see it with English subittles. I can understand the whole chorus of Nadia The Secret of Blue Water's theme song. I can also understand some kanji since I'm Chinese, though sometimes I keep mixing up the Japanese speech and my Mandarin speech when I read an array of kanji characters sharing meaning in both Chinese and Japanese.
