It's a bigger accomplishment for Mononoke Hime to beat Titanic in Japan than Ponyo to beat Indy 4. I mean at least Miyazaki stuck to the formula which made his films appealing in the first place.

Ponyo - 15.4 billion yen.
Indy 4 - 57.1 billion yen. "Not only were Hayao Miyazaki's animated Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea film and Yasuharu Ishii's live-action Hana Yori Dango Final film the highest grossing Japanese films in 2008, but they earned more at the Japanese box office than any foreign film last year." Wait what? I don't get it. |

Does anyone else feel a little emptier inside knowing that yet another run-of-the-mill Pokemovie made a decent killing in its native land? Haven't we learned yet?

Your dot slipped. Indy 4 "only" rose 5.71 billion yen.
Well let's see... In the 10 most grossing films in the US, you've got the 2nd Madagascar, the 4th Indiana Jones, the 5th Batman and the 22nd James Bond. Seems like all the people are the same... I'm just wondering where they left Detective Conan behind...? |

Well those 2 movies made in Japan made more money than all movies made in Japan for 2008. The 2 movies ALSO made more money than all foreign films that were shown in Japan for 2008 as well setting the record of being the highest money making entertaining films in all of Japan for 2008. |

No, not really. It's to be expected, considering Pokemon is still a massive franchise. I even know a few people in Japan (adults) who buy pretty much every new Pokemon game, presumably because they more or less grew up with it. |

The only reason why I see it still up there is because it actually relates with the 10th movie from last year....basically expect the 12th movie to do the same this coming year since it ties in the 11th and 10th movie. Other than that, I'm overall not surprised by this year's box office #1 and 2. Hana Yori Dango final was very good, and of course topped by a Miyazaki film The question is what happened to The Sky Crawlers? |

It's the same way in the rest of the world too, d00d, 'specially when you talk about the games. |
