I thought the Suicide Squad Isekai dub was solid, in my opinion. |

Great action packed first episode. This is also one of Sentai's better dubs even if it doesn't compare to Cowboy Bebop.

I just watched the first episode on Max and it was quite entertaining. Among the things that I like the most were the animation, very fluid, with good choreography and character acting, as well as good implementation of CGI elements that didn't feel distracting. I also find it interesting that, just like Bebop, Lazarus takes place in the future but with some elements that kind of feel like the past or present, that sort of "used future" aesthetic, but it also feels like Shinichiro's Carole & Tuesday in how it also tries to portray current issues, which like this review said, don't know if it's going to date the show very quickly. Can't say a lot about the main characters, the first episode doesn't give anyone besides Axel a lot of backstory, though even then Axel had a very vague flashback that obviously hints a tragic past. The whole episode I was reminded of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad in some ways, though it also gave the impression that I kind of seen other works like this before, for some reason I also though of other anime like Wolf's Rain, Great Pretender and Super Crooks. Just hope the rest of the episode can flesh out the rest of the cast and also offer some lore. I also felt that there were some lip-synch issues, it's kind of weird how Warner and Amazon can be so cheap when it comes to anime dubs, while Netflix and Disney actually hire better studios I also have to mention that the in the end the show was dubbed in Argentina, but I think it was done in Buenos Aires like other [as] anime like the recent FLCL series, Housing Complex C and Uzumaki, and I have to say I was a little bit disappointed, I'm actually Argentinean myself but the thing is that most argentinean actors have more experience in voice-over and not that much when it comes in acting, though I have that Lazarus' dub was kind of decent, though some characters like Doug sounded very plain, not to mention that the dub cast was not even credited at the end of the episode's credits as they do other services like Netflix and Disney+, only the English cast was credited, and since I'm not familiar with Argentine voice actors as I am with Mexican ones, I couldn't recognize any of the voices, the only VA that people were able to recognize was Arelys González as Eleina. I actually wanted to watch the series in Japanese first and then in Spanish just to compare, but there was not a Japanese audio option in Max, though I feel this series is meant to be watch in English perhaps, especially since it seems the LA Spanish dub is based on the English audio version.
In regards to single-takes, there was already an error in the Latin American Spanish dub, in the scene where a police officer was informed about Axel (I think it was a the 13 minute) they refer to him as Axel Roberto instead of Gilberto, and just to be sure I switched the audio to English and it said Gilberto. I know mistakes can happen, but was there not any quality control? |

If this were ANY other series, I'd probably just forget about it in a month and just not bother to watch it. Castlevania is the last animated series I watched dubbed in English, just because it was an American production to begin with. And I already have little enough reason to boot up the Max app besides the fact that everyone tells me I should watch The White Lotus. I can't fathom what the higher ups are thinking here, although I will admit that my kind (subtitle readers) have always been a minority. |

I guess Warner Discovery is marketing Lazarus as their own original work, perhaps they consider the English dub as the default audio, because ,as I mentioned above, the Spanish dub is done with the English audio as a base. I wonder if Lazarus will be aired with subs in [adult swim] Latin America tomorrow, because Ninja Kamui was aired subbed last year, despite that the Spanish dub was uploaded more or less at the same time on MAX. Speaking about Lazarus' international dub, now I have some info about its Neutral Spanish dub. It was recorded in Inway Studios, which funnily enough is located very near from where I live, and its not in a big city, but Inway has only dubbed 11 projects, including Lazarus, including all of the recent FLCL sequels and that Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The ADR is in charge of Sebastián Pérez Echegaray, who has directed projects like Another, Strike the Blood and the above mentioned FLCL sequels. And the main characters are voices are: - Axel =Braian Pavón. He has voiced characters in Disney's Descendants and in Parasyte the Maxim and Beyblade X, but it seems Axel is his first major role. - Doug = Conrado Gerón. He played Vulture in Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble, as well as other roles in shows like Big Mouth and Star vs. - Christine = Micaela Carla Oddera. She voiced Luz Noceda in The Owl House and she also recently voiced Reiko Hosho in The Dinner Table Detective - Leland = Hernán Tracchia. He voiced Sonic in the recent re-dub of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and now is Robin Kazami in Beyblade X - Eleina = Arelys González. She's actually from Venezula, where she voiced Sapphire in Steven Universe, but since she moved to Argentina she voiced characters like Anne Boonchuy in Amphibia - Skinner = Mario De Candia. He's Whisper in Yo-Kai Watch and Inspector Zenigata in Lupin III: Part 6, he's also recording his lines remotely since he now lives in Spain. All in all, while some of the VAs have plenty of experience, they mostly worked on cartoon and smaller productions, so anime is not their forte, not to mention than I think the recording studio is very small for such an important production. I guess WB. didn't think that much about the international dubs, since they thought people would watched it with subtitles, despite the fact that the Japanese audio will not be available until next month. |
