| Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) | Weak | Sort of a study in needless babble, Gundam Wing had some geniunely good mechanical designs, charismatic characters, and action-packed battles, with a good soundtrack and some strong voice acting in both the Japanese and English versions. However, what was only really a story fit for about thirty episodes went on for a needless fourty-nine, leading to some painful dragging and the tiring repetition in both words and actions. It has an air of pretention not easily surpassed by many other anime programs. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) | Weak | While it ties up some loose ends, Endless Waltz is mostly composed of unnecessary add-on material that could have easily been incorporated into the series proper, had some of the superflous babble been cut out. There are some truly strange moments in this, and it seems the Gundams have only been redesigned for purposes of toy-selling (I guess you can't begrudge them too much, though, since that's largely the point of Gundam), but we're supposed to accept them as if they were always that way. The ending comes off as being somewhat a cop-out, as well. However, I've seen far worse. There's at least some pretty exciting moments, such as Heero's stand at the climax of the final episode. If you're already a big fan of Gundam Wing, there'd be no reason to miss out on this. |

| Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie) | Excellent (dub & sub) | The explosively epic climax to the battle between the Earth Federation and Zeon, Char's Counterattack has high-stakes action as well as Tomino's usual flair for the dramatic. Can one man change humankind? You'll almost wish he can. |

| Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) | So-so (dub), Very good (sub) | My personal favorite of the Gundam OVAs, it combines gritty grunt combat with a sweet (if somewhat hurried) love story. It loses focus at times, but remains strong where it makes its points. One of the finest Gundam productions. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Miller's Report (movie) | So-so (dub & sub) | Sort of an extended version of episodes 8 and 9 of the OVA, reworked and added onto, Miller's Report adds a little context for a few of the situations in the later episodes of 08th MS Team. But there's really not much new here, aside from the character of Alice Miller and her manipulative ways. Still, if you have the time, and you've already bought the 08th MS Team boxset in which it's included, it's not a total waste. |

| Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) | Not really good (dub), Masterpiece (sub) | Zeta Gundam is the Gundam franchise at its strongest. Not only for its plot complexities and interesting characters, but because it addresses ideas and issues that most mecha shows don't as maturely as it does, or as well. And it has a dark, moody atmosphere that lends itself well to the story as well as the characters and situations. |
| Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation (movies) | Weak | The original Gundam trilogy movies took 43 episodes and shaped them into three movies running at over two and a half hours long, approaching the story in a somewhat condensed, but more focused manner. However, the Zeta Gundam movies took fifty episodes of non-stop, non-filler story episodes and chopped them up into material for three movies that are slightly over an hour and a half each. Needless to say, much of the body of the story was cut out. Unfortunately, so was the heart, soul, and mind of the story. The Zeta movies were lazily cobbled together as an effort to cash in on nostalgia and their new "spin" does an injustice to the spirit of the source. Tomino should be ashamed of this travesty. |

| Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) | Masterpiece (dub & sub) | There's a certain attitude and approach to Evangelion which seperates it from the rest of the 90s mecha programs, and possibly a position within the great pantheon of anime greats. It may be, for all intents and purposes, the usual "fragile boy pilots father's robot" story, but character interaction seems to reveal a strong theme of (mis)communication and the mentioned "Hedgehog's Dilemma". It's generally well-directed, though production concerns and scene composition takes a bit of a drop within the last quarter of the series. While it can be said that it borders on pretentious, it's still a fantastic work. Plus, y'know, Pen Pen. |
