The Otaking's Realm Rating Comment
Animation Runner Kuromi (OAV) Good Industry in-joke flicks tend to be annoying, but this little piece is kinda fun. It also serves to demythologize the routine business of coughing out the keys and the indignity of doing the in-betweens. Every time I see an anime series wildly oscilating in animation quality, I think of poor Mikiko flailing to keep a deadline, and I feel a bit more forgiving.
Animation Runner Kuromi 2 (OAV) Good Smoking leeks can be damaging to your health.
Comic Party (TV) So-so Doujinshi, the life blood of a culture. This series takes itself way too seriously to be a proper parody, or a real examination of the existential drive to draw panty shots for fun & profit. Mostly, it ain't all that funny, and there is something slightly cruel in letting quite so many jokes die of sheer exhaustion.
(The) Daichis - Earth Defence Family (TV)
Daicon films (special) Good I've long dreamed of skysurfing on a sword while wearing a bunny costume.
Genshiken (TV) Excellent The most cogent argument for the inclusion of "Otakism" in the paraphilia section of the DSM IV. A loving and knowing, almost erudite, take on the joys and sorrows of being young, free and a COMPLETE Otaku -Ah, the memories. Saki is the most wonderfully executed character in decades:"You know, lately, the pain in my heart has started to feel good. I wonder if that counts as a kind of S&M." Priceless, priceless.
Genshiken 2 (TV) Very good
Genshiken: Second Generation (TV) Good
Ghiblies (special) Good Admit it, it's rather fascinating to peek into other people's in-jokes. The real shock for the unitiated is the sheer salaryman-ness of the corporate culture portrayed. Weren't creative types supposed to be more on the sandal & ponytail side? Alas, such is the harsh truth.
Kujibiki Unbalance (OAV) Excellent A parody within a parody show. Double mercy. Flawlessly designed by the most perceptive team of Otakulogists around, it hits every note with perfect pitch. The opening sequence alone is a work of art.
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV) Good
Oreimo (TV) Good
Oreimo 2 (TV) Not really good Mother of mercy, guys, grow a pair! Starts fairly well, with reasonably well thought-out character sketches, and then, it derails badly. Not being able to decide exactly what they wanted to do, or lacking the guts to push through what they really wanted, the final conception is poor and the execution execrable, with an ending guarantee to dissatisfy everyone. The finale does have one of the nicest and most satisfying uppercuts ever, though.
Otaku no Video (OAV) Very good Anthropological documentary-making of such high caliber that I expected Nanook to make an appearance at any time. And harpoon a couple of Akihabara walruses while he was at it.
