posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
NHK has green-lit a live-action television series based on Shigeru Tsuchiyama's Kinban Gourmet Bushimeshi! manga. The series will premiere on the NHK BS Premium channel in January, and will air on Tuesdays with the title Bakumatsu Gourmet Bushimeshi!. The series will have eight episodes.
The manga is based on the book by Edo-era samurai Sakai Banshirō (the manga credits him for the original work), where he describes the daily life and eating habits of an Edo samurai on duty in a feudal lord's estate in Edo. In the manga, Banshirō travels from Kishū domain to Edo, and begins chronicling the food he eats on duty.
The cast includes:
- Kōji Seto as Sakai Banshirō
- Mitsuru Hirata as Heizō, Banshirō's uncle
- Masao Kusakari as Banshirō's feudal lord
- Ayaka Miyoshi as Banshirō's wife
- Keiko Toda as Chiyo, the lord's wife
Kei Tanaka, Wakana Sakai, Mayū Kusakari, and Yu Tokui will also appear in the series.
Tsuchiyama launched the manga in LEED Publishing Co., Ltd.'s Comic Ran magazine in December 2014. LEED Publishing released the manga's first compiled book volume in December 2015. JManga previously published Tsuchiyama's Gokudō Meshi manga in 2011 and it inspired a live-action film in 2011. Gokudō Meshi ended in 2012.
