The series will have three 30-minute episodes. They will all stream on dTV — Docomo's revamped streaming video service — on August 15.
The series will tell a new story about the everyday lives and secrets of soldiers (particularly Hanji's "Titan research" and the origin story of the 3D maneuver gear), and will tie in to the two live-action films. The series will star Satomi Ishihara, who is reprising her role as Hanji from the two live-action films.
The following cast will also reprise their roles:
Nanami Sakuraba as Sasha
Shū Watanabe as Fukushi
Rina Takeda as Lil
Ayame Misaki as Hiana
Additionally, Yūta Hiraoka (NANA, Mirai Nikki ANOTHER:WORLD) will join the cast as a new character "Izuru" for the show.
Isayama's original Attack on Titan manga has inspired four spinoff manga, a 25-episode television anime version that aired in 2013, and two compilation anime films, the second of which opened in June. Additionally, a second season of the television anime series is slated to air in 2016. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009.
The live-action film adaptation will span two films. Director Shinji Higuchi stated that, with the supervision of Attack on Titan manga creator Hajime Isayama, the story will be based on the world and characters of the manga, while incorporating new characters and new formidable enemies. Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, live-action Gantz, Gantz II: Perfect Answer, 20th Century Boys, Gatchaman) is writing the script. Film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, who is also friends with Isayama, is working on the scripts together with Isayama and Watanabe.
Funimation hosted the first live-action film's worldwide premiere in Hollywood on July 14. The film will open in Japan on Saturday, and the second movie, Attack on Titan: End of the World, will open on September 19. Funimation plans to release the first film in American theaters this fall.
