tri-Ace develops 1st new game in franchise in 6 years

Square Enix revealed on Wednesday that it is developing the Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness role-playing game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

The company also began streaming an announcement trailer on Wednesday. The trailer recaps the franchise and introduces the new game.

tri-Ace will again develop the game, and Akira Yasuda (Akiman, character designer for Turn A Gundam, Bodacious Space Pirates) will design the characters. Kaito Ishikawa and Nao Tōyama will star in the game. Square Enix has not yet revealed a release date or price for the game.

The official website includes the catchphrase "Toward the star ocean that grows ever farther away."

Square Enix filed a new Star Ocean trademark in 2013, but Square Enix's Taro Yokō and Takamasa Shiba denied that no Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, or Romancing Saga were in development at the time. Mobile company Nepro had purchased the Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile developer tri-Ace earlier this year.

tri-Ace and Enix released the first Star Ocean game for the Super Famicom in 1996. The latest game in the franchise, Star Ocean 4 (Star Ocean: The Last Hope) shipped on the Xbox 360 in 2009, with a PS3 international version shipping in 2010.

The video game series inspired Mayumi Azuma's Star Ocean: The Second Story manga in 1998 and its 2001 television anime Star Ocean EX. Geneon released the anime in North America. Aoi Mizuki's Star Ocean: Blue Sphere manga launched in 2002, and Akira Kanda debuted the Star Ocean: Till the End of Time manga in 2003.
