Samurai 7 Sci-Fi Anime Gets Stage Musical
posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Nelke Planning announced on Saturday that the Samurai 7 television anime series is receiving a stage musical adaptation. The musical will run at The Galaxy Theatre in Tokyo's Shinagawa ward in January 2015.
Yukio Ueshima (Prince of Tennis musicals) is directing and choreographing the musical. Toshihiko Sahashi (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Full Metal Panic!) is composing the music.
Samurai 7 is a futuristic remake of Akira Kurosawa's world-renowned 1954 live-action film Seven Samurai. The 2004 science-fiction anime already inspired a stage play at Tokyo's Shinjuku koma Theater in 2008. The play also ran in Tokyo's Aoyama Theatre in 2010 and 2012.
The anime aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block, the IFC premium cable channel, and FUNimation Channel. Funimation also released the series on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in North America. The series inspired a 2006 manga adaptation that Del Rey published in North America.
