The Japanese government announced on Culture Day on Saturday that it is awarding Tetsuya Chiba, the creator of such classic manga and anime as Ashita no Joe and Notari Matsutaro, with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (pictured below). He and animator Taku Furukawa are among 914 people being honored with the Order of the Rising Sun this fall, and another 3,026 are being awarded with the Order of the Sacred Treasure. Chiba succeeded Anpanman creator Takashi Yanase as the head of the Japan Cartoonists Association earlier this year.
The Japanese government also announced this week that manga creator and anime director Hayao Miyazaki is among 15 people honored as Persons of Cultural Merit this year.
Two years ago, manga and anime creator Leiji Matsumoto received The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Earlier in 2010, Golgo 13 manga creator Takao Saitō and Sunset on Third Street (San-chōme no Yūhi - Yūyake no Uta) manga creator Ryohei Saigan were among those honored. In 2009, director Nobuhiko Ōbayashi (1983's Toki o Kakeru Shōjo, Shōnen Keniya) and manga translator and scholar Frederik L. Schodt received the honor.
