Hirotaka Komiya, a 23-year-old leading seaman in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces, was discharged from duty for stealing bishōjo dating games valued at 50,000 yen (about US$600). According to the inspector general's office in the Sasebo region, Komiya visited a game software store in Sasebo City five times from last October to this past March and stole 10 items including love games.
In April, a Sasebo summary court sentenced Komiya to pay 150,000 yen (US$1,900) for his theft. Komiya was discharged from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces on June 30.
In a similar but unrelated case, a 29-year-old Self-Defense Forces member was also arrested in June under suspicion of illegally uploading videogames and manga online.
