Japanese Animation DVD Ranking, August 13–20
posted on by Egan Loo
Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea has ranked as the #1 film at the Japanese box office for over a month, and that propelled almost all the previous Miyazaki/Ghibli feature films into the bestselling DVD charts again. My Neighbor Totoro was not only #1 on the anime DVD chart last week, but it moved from #22 to #8 for all DVDs in Japan. The film also celebrated its 20th anniversary with a July television screening that earned high ratings. The Totoro DVD was actually first released back in 2001, and has sold 846,000 copies since then. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (#58 to #31 on the overall DVD chart), Kiki's Delivery Service (#65 to #35), Princess Mononoke (#77 to #44), and Spirited Away (#84 to #45) also made the top 10 anime DVD chart, with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind coming in at #14 (#90 to #58) and Porco Rosso at #19 (#109 to #83). Only the last feature by Miyazaki, 2004's Howl's Moving Castle, did not make the top 20 anime DVD list this past week.
