Utena Voice Actress Tomoko Kawakami Hospitalized

The official email newsletter of Tomoko Kawakami, the lead voice actress in La fillette révolutionaire Utena, Hikaru no Go, Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy, Air, and many other anime titles, revealed that she admitted herself to a hospital last Saturday for an unspecified illness. The newsletter and Utena director Kunihiko Ikuhara's official website also reported that she would be undergoing surgery this past Tuesday. Ikuhara visited Kawakami before the surgery on Sunday and said that, while he was surprised by Kawakami's sudden news, her face looked healthy. The two engaged in regular, friendly conversation, and Ikuhara expects that Kawakami will leave the hospital before long. Kawakami and Ikuhara appeared at Anime Expo 2001 as guests.
