Umineko no Naku Koro ni TV Anime Officially Announced
posted on by Egan Loo
A promotional flyer from Frontier Works, one of the producers of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry - Higurashi) anime, has officially announced that a television anime adaptation of Ryukishi07/07th Expansion's Umineko no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry - Seagulls) mystery suspense dōjin game has been green-lit for production. Production on the anime is set to begin this summer, and the anime's website will eventually be posted at umineko.tv. Like 07th Expansion's two previous When They Cry works (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai), Umineko no Naku Koro ni follows a spate of murders in a remote Japanese location in the 1980s— this time, on the island of Rokkenjima in October of 1986.
The North American distributor Geneon Entertainment released the first part of the When They Cry - Higurashi anime in the United States last year. However, another distributor, Funimation, announced this month that it will be handling distribution of the series starting this September. Yen Press licensed the manga version of When They Cry - Higurashi for its Yen Plus anthology magazine, which will launch this month. The Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai sequel has also been animated with another sequel announced in OVA format. The original Higurashi story has been adapted into a live-action film and a planned live-action sequel.
