Japanese Animation DVD Ranking, May 23–29
posted on by Egan Loo
With the end of the month come a fresh batch of DVDs from Aniplex, Bandai Visual, and VAP, and it shows in the all-new top ten lineup this week with no repeats from last week. The latest volumes of Code Geass, Death Note, and Gintama make their expected debut on top, but joining them are some familiar classics.
Gundam Evolve Plus collects the first five movie-quality shorts that were animated to showcase Bandai's Gundam models. Japanese fans finally get the New Kimagure Orange Road movie DVD that North American fans have had for six years. Satoshi Kon's critically-acclaimed Paprika does not fare as well as its fellow 2006 award-contender, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, on DVD. Paprika's standard edition only makes #6, while its deluxe box is even lower at #16, despite its hefty 760-page storyboard book, interviews, and video extras.
