Death Note's Tetsuro Araki directs Hajime Isayama's conflict between humans & giants

2013's first issue of Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine is announcing the cast of the Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) television anime series on Saturday:

  • Yuuki Kaji as Eren, a boy who dreams of the world outside the walls and enlists in the training corps
  • Yui Ishikawa as Mikasa, a girl who was rescued by Eren when they were young
  • Marina Inoue as Armin, Eren and Mikasa's childhood friend who teaches Eren of the world outside

Hajime Isayama's original manga depicts the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. Isayama launched the manga in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009. The manga has become a sleeper hit, and Kodansha USA is publishing the manga for North America.

The next Bessatsu Shonen Magazine issue also confirms that director Tetsuro Araki (Death Note, Highschool of the Dead, Guilty Crown), head writer Yasuko Kobayashi (Shakugan no Shana, Claymore, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), character designer Kyoji Asano (Psycho-Pass, Tokyo Marble Chocolate), and Wit Studio (in cooperation with Production I.G) are working on Attack on Titan. Araki describes himself as being a huge fan of the manga for a long time, and thus considers it an honor to take part in its anime adaptation.

The anime will premiere on the MBS station next spring. The domain of anime's website www.shingeki.tv was registered under Pony Canyon on October 31. A separate live-action film adaptation with director Tetsuya Nakashima (Kamikaze Girls, Confessions, Paco and the Magical Picture Book) will open in Japan in fall of 2013 or later.
