The Last Unicorn Gets Theatrical Re-release

Adaptation of Peter S. Beagle's novel animated by Topcraft gets theater run

The 1982 Rankin/Bass Productions animated film The Last Unicorn will receive a theatrical re-release in 2012 and 2013. In honor of the film's 30th anniversary, over 80 digital theater screenings in 2D and 3D will take place in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Germany. The film was animated by Topcraft, which worked with Hayao Miyazaki on the adaptation of his Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga two years later. Peter S. Beagle will attend every event for the film based on his 1968 fantasy novel, answer questions, greet fans, and sign autographs.

The Last Unicorn will receive a five-million dollar digital renovation before its theatrical run. The process will involve upgrading the film's special effects and soundtrack, improving character animation, finishing backgrounds, and adding five to eight minutes of new animated sequences.

Lionsgate released The Last Unicorn on DVD in 2007, and the film also received a Blu-ray/DVD combination release in February. Beagle has appeared at multiple anime conventions throughout the years, including Otakon in 2008 and 2010.
