Mazinger Z: Infinity Opens in Philippines on April 18

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

A billboard at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue in Metro Manila revealed last Friday that the Mazinger Z: Infinity film will open in the Philippines on April 18. SM Cinema previously announced a screening for the film.

The film opened in Japan on January 13, and sold 54,000 tickets at 152 screens in its first two days to earn 87 million yen (about US$785,610) and rank #6 at the Japanese box office. The film has earned a cumulative total of 192,612,900 yen (about US$1.73 million).

Junji Shimizu (One Piece: Episode of Chopper - The Miracle Winter Cherry Blossom, Precure All Stars New Stage: Mirai no Tomodachi) directed the film off a script by ume's Takahiro Ozawa (Tokyo Toybox, Steves). Takayuki Yanase (Ghost in the Shell Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00) drafted the mechanic designs, and Hiroya Iijima (Afro Samurai) designed the characters. Green's Makoto Ujiie (Gundam franchise, EUREKA SEVEN AO) handled the background art, and Yō Nakano served as assistant director.

Ichirō Mizuki returned to the franchise to perform the film's opening theme song, which is an updated version of his opening theme song for the original series. Mizuki has also performed theme songs for Mazinger Z tai Ankoku Daishōgun, Mazinger Z Vs. Devilman, Mazinger Z Vs. Dr. Hell, Great Mazinger, and Great Mazinger tai Getter Robo G - Kūchū Dai-Gekitotsu. Kouji Kikkawa performed the film's ending theme song "The Last Letter."

Toshiyuki Watanabe (Space Brothers, Ginga Hyōryū Vifam, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Ginga Kikōtai Majestic Prince) composed the film's music. Watanabe's father, composer Michiaki Watanabe, composed the music for Mazinger Z and its movies, and Great Mazinger and its movies.

The film commemorates the 45th anniversary of the original Mazinger Z manga and television anime series. Toei Animation produced the project, and Toei is distributing the film.
