Otakon 2006
Geneon Entertainment
by Jonathan Mays,
Presenters: Stephen Tang, Terry Ho, Rhona Medina
Geneon opened its 7 p.m. panel by thanking the audience of 250 for choosing their panel over the Otakon masquerade, which was running at the same time, and advertising their 8:30 Hellsing Ultimate premiere and 1 a.m. "Geneon After Dark" panel. After showing a few digital stills of Mylene Farmer's new music video, a co-production with Production I.G, Tang jumped into the first of several clips, each followed by release info and trivia:
Shakugan no Shana
DVD, CD, DVD/CD combo on September 5
24 episodes over 6 volumes
Animation by J.C. Staff
Music by Kō Ōtani
Ending theme by Yoko Takahashi (Evangelion)
Fate/stay night
DVD delayed until December
24 eps over 6 volumes
Tang then asked the most difficult and perhaps embarrassing trivia question of the night: Name all of the shows at the top of the PowerPoint slide. After seven attendees tried and failed, one person on the far right of the room rose and recited Ergo Proxy, Hellsing Ultimate, Shakugan no Shana, The Law of Ueki, Elemental Gelade, Kamichu!, and GUNxSWORD. He was rewarded with a t-shirt and wallscroll. Then the trailers returned:
Ergo Proxy
DVD on November 21
Director from Witch Hunter Robin
Scriptwriter from Samurai Champloo, Eureka 7
US Producer from Hellsing Ultimate
Paradise Kiss
DVD on December 19
Opening theme rights secured, still working on ending theme
Geneon's only major announcement was more of a pre-announcment: Hellsing Ultimate's release date will be unveiled tonight at a Q&A with producer Satoshi Fuji that will follow Hellsing's 8:30 p.m. screening. The 8:30 event will also be the world premire of a clip from episode 2, which has not yet been shown in Japan.
The panel wrapped with a few audience questions. Tang reiterated director Shinichiro Watanabe's comment that Samurai Champloo was finished and will not receive a second season but allowed, "In this industry, you never know." And on upcoming announcements, naturally, "No comment."
