I think it would have made more sense to have it start in Japan first because that's the country that it started in. It's possible that they wanted to start in foreign countries first because maybe the fan base in foreign countries collectively exceeds the native Japanese fans.

But Isn't zipp concert places too small for Miku now? I think it was where Miku's first full concert was held at, Zipp Tokyo. |

Wait, I thought that contest was to have people use the English Miku. I guess it's just a contest in general...?
I've been curious to see how they've improved English Miku, because the last time I heard her, she was barely comprehensible. I hear people in Japan have a rough time learning English, so it'll be an incredible uphill climb. That, and English is a lot less modular than Japanese, so I'd imagine it's inherently a lot harder to program. (It's why Tetra's Trackers was never released outside of Japan, for one.) |

Contestants outside of Japan can use the English Miku, assuming she sounds a little better than she did on "Sharing The World". |

The problem with English isn't that it's less modular - it's that it's downright atomic, with far more sounds to boot. In addition to an alphabet that's just a bit too small for simple mapping of words to sounds(Merriam-Webster uses forty-five symbols for its pronunciation keys), English has the minor problem of having multiple major systems of pronunciation mapping - so you have to figure out which one a word belongs to before you can figure out how to say it. There's a reason people like to say there's more exceptions than words that follow the rules in English: you eventually grok the method, but actually trying to figure out the theory leads to madness(and most of the true exceptions are common words).

A result of English beginning as a mishmash of four different languages, huh? I remember someone with a background in English language study and computer programming attempted to create a concrete set of rules for English and fed it to a computer. I don't remember the link, but he got to about 85% accuracy last I checked. Ironically, despite him teaching English academically, "teacher" was one of the words it could not interpret correctly.
I feel like if you want to make Miku speak in English, you have to build the program from the ground up. Either have it based on a dictionary or use that pronunciation system you see in dictionaries, I say. Still, it's highly imprecise. |
