as good as that arc with Chitoge's mom was (and it was REALLY good), that is the last bit of real character development/plot progress the series has had in all the chapters until now.

It can be frustrating; even the filler chapters bring smiles to my face with its humor, and that's a testament to Komi's skill, but it's like there's a flat-out REFUSAL to advance the plot in any way, shape, or form. 'But ALL shonen harem/romance series are this way!", you say? The thing is, like the last arc in this volume demonstrates, Nisekoi was and has been BETTER than that, and still has the potential to be so much more. Every addition to Raku's harem just makes me depressed; this didn't used to be a harem series!

Oh well, i still relatively enjoy reading this every week through shonen jump. maybe one day plot and character progression will return, but i'm not holding my breath.

Nisekoi is pretty much going in the wrong direction as of late. From one of the most entertaining harem manga into just another generic one. God, even now Chitoge is just another dumb harem girl. I don't even know how to even describe it but it's like she has lost her character completely and replaced by someone else. Onodera is still undeveloped as ever. Marika is fun but I felt like she is not focused on that much. Haru is, man, did we need another Onodera? Tsugumi, I thought she was an interesting character but she has lost that charm also. Then they ended up adding that new girl which was just stupid. It has came to the point that the only reason I'm still reading Nisekoi is for Shuu and Ruri.

I didn't mind spoiler[the latest addition to the harem because she at least provided some progress to the "promise girl" mystery], but I agree that this series has been creatively stagnant for a long time, and its refusal to move forward and change the status quo even a little bit can be infuriating.

With the anime getting a second season, it seems Komi wants to keep Nisekoi running for as long as it possibly can, so he's now on cruise control mode.

Onodera "has other talents and interests other than liking Raku"?

In what universe? Laughing

Chitoge's mother arc is probably my favorite arc. But the reviewer needs to give Marika more credit; she's hilarious. She's just so over-the-top and crazy. I love her ridiculous antics. She makes me laugh hard and she's the only one who isn't afraid to say what she feels. Compared to everyone else, this is refreshing.

The only characters I dislike in this series are Baka-dera and Yui. Out of how many there are, that's not too bad.

Wow, really? I thought the recent arc when Ruri's spoiler[grandfather died slash was dying] and Maiko supported her to be one of the series' best, and definitely built some character between the two, as well as constructive towards their relationship(?).

Although that might be because it was quite similar to the stellar Summer Wars.

Chapter 62 was the worst. I've been enjoying the series, but that was way too happy an ending when spoiler[Hana decided to turn the plane around and inexplicably land back at whatever open field Raku and Chitoge were watching from. And then she enjoys a pseudo-yuri moment with her daughter on Christmas Eve at the fancy hotel?] There was a better way for Chitoge to find out where her ribbon came from, without the sappy writing.

Plot progression, yes. Character development, no. I can recall story arcs later on when some of the other side characters get substantial development or insight into why they function the way they do, though arguably, it IS the last bit I know about from Raku and Chitoge.

I prefered the story about Chitoge's mother, but yes, that was another great part of the series. It's one of the arcs I was thinking of in that earlier part of my post. The other one is the one about spoiler[their previous teacher leaving, which fills in a lot of missing pieces for Maiko's behavior]. Maybe that illustrates the point about lack of character development: Naoshi Komi will do it for side characters, but not when it can limit the length of the series, it seems.

All in all, I watch a lot of episodic television and have read a lot of episodic comics, so Nisekoi being so adherent to the status quo should not have annoyed me so much. Then I thought about how you have a lot of stories that look like they'll start answering lingering questions or further characters' relationships that then turn out to be for nothing. This is the same carrot-on-a-string kind of writing that we found in InuYasha, and it gets on my nerves the same way. Considering InuYasha was such a long series and Nisekoi is stably hanging out in the middle of the Weekly Shonen Jump rankings, do Japanese readers like this sort of series?

It could also be executive meddling too....

I could probably enjoy Nisekoi for several more years without getting sick of it. The comedy is gold, that's for sure.
