I wasn't impressed with this movie. I don't understand the high ratings it has earned. It was mostly forgettable.

grooven: Yeah, I agree that it was overrated. Ichi the Killer, on the other hand, though... I'd be amused at anyone trying to remake that here.

Admittedly, Audition had some boring parts, but forgettable? The 'kiri-kiri-kiri' scene has been permanently burned into my brain.

I also didn't find Audition to be all that shocking. It was well-acted and directed, of course. Though it probably could have done without the "real puke drinking" scene, which thankfully I didn't know was real when I saw the film...

Ichi the Killer is a tough watch. Doable, but tough. Haven't seen Visitor Q yet, but heard about some of its stuff. Full Metal Yakuza is also worth a watch, and the random necrophelia shot between a blood-stained corpse and a Yakuza was, well random...but it made the movie feel more like a Miike film! God, this is the same guy who went on to make the Phoenix Wright movie... But yeah, those ones have more "shock" to them than Audition.

Anyhow, the ones on board for this remake should just stop pretending they're "adapting the novel" and say they're remaking the film, because Hollywood has run out of ideas and Asia is where we run to when we're out of ideas.

Visitor Q is absolutely nuts. It's pretty disgusting, but depending the person, it can also be hilarious. If you're a Miike fan, I'm assuming you've seen Happiness of the Katakuris? It's a horror musical, and it is glorious.

I think the reason why people found Audition shocking was that it was such a slow burn. It starts out fairly normal, and then suddenly it takes a turn into the weird/disgusting/wince-inducing.
It's definitely different than modern horror where they're either all haunted house movies, or they just spend 3/4 of the running time torturing people.

I'd agree with this. It starts off as a legit romantic comedy and then turns into horror. I can't think of many horror movies that make a twist like that. I could see people being extremely shocked if someone just started the film and didn't tell them before hand that it was a horror film.
