One of the things I liked about this series was how it steered away from some of the usual tropes. I suppose technically you could say the MC had a harem since his party was comprised of a coterie of cute girls. However only one of the girls actually showed any romantic interest in the MC which I find to be pretty uncommon in these types of series. In addition the MC reciprocated those feelings and there was a bit of a slowburn romance at play which also struck me as unusual.

I also liked how the MC relied on the girls in his party and genuinely seemed to need their assistance at times in spite of how OP he was.

For me the weakest part of this series was the overarching plot. I actually enjoyed the interactions between the MC and his friends. However the series did fall a bit flat towards the end.

Also to the best of my recollection the series was very light on the usual sort of sexualized fan service. Which I don't neccessarily see as either a positive or negative but more as another point of difference.

Completely disagree with the idea that this is bland and uninspired. For once, there's an actual explanation as to why the MC is so much better then the rest. Yes, he was broken to begin with, but the reason why everyone is so much weaker then him now is actually explained. spoiler[After the breakdown of the human civilization, the surviving demons posed as humans and taught the surviving humans wrong, to keep them weak. This is why human believed the actual strongest crest was the weakest.] Yeah, humans are dumb enough to fall for that. We've already seen that a lot of people will believe random poster on the internet over an actual doctor.

Combine this with a very low amount of fanservice (I don't I remember any scene with gratuitous nudity) and some adorable characters (I absolutely loved Iris and Alma) and you have an actual enjoyable series. And it's not even an isekai.

This aired in what was, to my mind, one of the weakest anime seasons for a few years. For that reason, I somehow ended up watching it right through.

The review pretty much nails it. It's a bland, uninspired power-fantasy with next to nothing to recommend it. There are maybe a couple of gags revolving around the dragon-girl that don't completely fall flat, but beyond that, it's a half-hearted, bland mess that I struggle to remember just a couple of months after I watched it.

If you've seen Girlish Number, you'll recall it has a show-within-a-show - Millennium Princess × Kowloon Overlord - which is a pastiche of a badly-made, directed-by-committee fantasy show based on bland light novels. I hadn't thought about Girlish Number for a few years, but this actually put me strongly in mind of that show-within-a-show.

I suppose it gets some points for being straightforward fantasy rather than isekai. That's got to be worth something.

So this is another generic power fantasy (Mary Sue main character) with a harem anime?

One of the few series I was rooting for a villain, ANY villain crack the lead protagonist within a millimeter of his life. There was maybe one scene where he kinda had one bead of worry sweat, but it evaporated instantaneously. This show went beyond boring, into the black hole of banality. UGH!

I bailed on this series after the first episode since it looked like it was headed in the direction described by the review even at that time. Apparently that was the correct call. . .

I gave it the three episode try before bailing on it. Bland and totally lacking in anything original for this setup. I want my time back.

the animation isn't bad to be honest and while the plot is too normal it doesn't mean it's bad.

That was basically the whole review. Entirely C grade. Nothing of offence but so bland as to resist all criticism or complement. Its only interesting idea was the demon trick, which was proven to do nothing but make people underestimate the main character. As if the show needed a reason why everyone didn't surrender to his all knowing straight away.

I gave it the three episode test and didn't like it but couldn't explain why. I guess there wasn't much to explain.

I binged it at the end of the season. I find that the best way to go through these generic power fantasies- otherwise I find myself forgetting details from week to week because I have so little invested in remembering them

I think the most telling aspect of how lacking in depth this was was that none of the characters had families to speak of. They came from nothing- just tropes to fill a void.

This is exactly the situation of Wise Man's Grandchild, but it progresses much better in that show.

I think the review missed the most important point, the 'weakest crest' isnt the weakest, the enemy just told people it was.

The whole point of the heroes reincarnation was he defeated the demons in his age but he wasnt strong enough to beat the aliens that created them, he had reached the power limit of his crest (the first crest). So his solution was to reincarnate with a stronger crest (the fourth crest), one that would allow him to surpass his previous limitation and fight the aliens themselves.

The First Crest makes you good at enhancement magic, i.e. crafting magical weapons and armour as well as buffing. However it does not itself enhance combat magic and its slow XP.

The Second Crest enhances magic strength, its good for power attacks and magic penetration but its other ability parameters are all average.

The Third Crest enhances speed of casting, its good for rapid fire attacks or quickly casting a chain of spells and its power fades less quickly with distance making it excellent at ranged spells, but the attacks it produces are inherently weaker.

The Fourth Crest enhances close combat magic, it enhances speed and power of casting close range or touch attacks, can generate shields and has inherent stamina benefits however its balanced by the fact that the magic weakens more quickly with distance meaning ranged attacks are really weak and it is also inherently weaker at support spells and magical crafting.

Thats not plot or story, thats background. The thing that was established in episode 1 and had no twists.
