I can see multiple different Hollywood versions for the same project.
It depends on how several of the upcoming "giant robot/monster" films turn out in the next couple years would Hollywood interest churn or not for using the Patlabor name. |

A Hollywood remake of a non-mainstream anime that plays like a Ghostbusters film? I don't see how this could work, unless they got a team in Hollywood that understood the mechanics of both franchises very well. Giant robots also haven't made an impression on American filmgoers so far.

We already have Patlabor live action set in America, it's called Police Academy, you just need to imagine there are robots involved.
Besides the comedy that makes Patlabor great is very Japanese, in otherwords it's very 80's based slapstick. Not something contemporary American tastes would appreciate, and if they change it, Patlabor loses its soul. |

Remember that what may seem lame and boring to us (like Hollywood) is seen as a lot cooler in Japan because it's foreign and therefore not as commonplace.

It would actually be easy to justify an American locale, since Kanuka was observing Division 2 for the purposes of developing a NYC Labor unit.
Of course, I'm sure an American movie would toss all the original characters, including Kanuka, and I care more about the characters in Patlabor than its other elements. Incidentally, it'd be nice if the live-action Patlabor series from a few years ago was streamed somewhere. |

If they make it like Super Troopers or Reno 911 (maybe slightly less raunchy, though), it could work. I mean, it won't, but it could.

Patlabor is one of few series where I could see a Hollywood adaption working, especially as a comedy. There could be really fascinating plot points for the series side too; but I don't expect anyone in Hollywood to handle that well.
I kind of have lovely dreams for this now, but I also can already see how this would be goofed up beyond belief, and hope it's never touched. ^u^; Would not complain if it was an all female team though a la the Ghostbusters remake, hehe. |

Well, except for Transformers. And Power Rangers, very soon. In general though, the American mainstream doesn't take giant robots so seriously, especially the piloted kind, between their presence in shows aimed at kids and them requiring a level of suspension of disbelief, more so now that we HAVE robots for military purposes that aren't humanoid in the least.
And it works in reverse too. |

There is slapstick, but this is Oshii and Ito, there's a lot of dialogue-heavy, character and situation based comedy. It's frequently just a workplace comedy, with occasional cringe comedy elements. As a cartoon, it obviously lacks the improvisation elements of modern US comedy, but otherwise there's a lot in common. |
