ADV is gone but Sentai Filmworks is still alive?

Sentai Filmworks, which is releasing Clannad and After Story (not ADV) is alive and well, thankfully.

From my point of view ADV was company run by fans for fans. They were always open and accessible to us otaku of the west. When I heard they were officially dead I was not shocked but I was disappointed, they made some poor descisions that came back to bight them. I will miss ADV, but maybe just maybe future anime distributors can learn what they did right, and how to treat the fans. I also hope they learn form ADV's mistakes and can keep anime alive in the west.

So you think VA's who were usually just ADV actors (i.e. jessica boone, kira vincent davis, nancy noventy, sasha paysinger, shelley calene black) will start showing up in FUNi titles more?

On a side note, anyone who does not yet own a copy of Princess Tutu needs to procure one right away.
Good god you are right! Thank you for reminding me!

Sigh, I remember I was an ADV maniac when I was first getting into buying releases. Plus the Anime Network VOD in its early days was my main way of watching new stuff for awhile.

It's strange when something you think will always be there isn't. But we knew this would happen this year or next. The rumblings of ADV's trouble was huge and everyone knew it.

Oh this sucks I really loved their PeaceMaker, Azumanga Dioh, and Full Metal Panic Dubs. Does this mean I lost my chance to buy Clannad or will it still be available even though ADV is gone? I hate the way the is economy now........

^ Clannad and the other current ADV licenses will continue to be available through Sentai.

Wait, so does this mean Sentai Filmworks has shut down too?

I doubt it. Based on this news, it seems SF will now license its licenses for distribution.

It makes perfect sense. ADV did it all, but now these parts are within different companies. I'm curious to know if ADV had issues making changes based on the way they were set up as a corporation.

I wouldn't be too surprised if FUNimation licenses some titles from SF and acts as a dub/distributor.

As for those other companies, well, it'll be interesting to see if they can garner capital to remain in the anime industry. I've not heard of two of them, so it won't be a surprise if Ledford and co. have stakes in these businesses ADV just sold (or transferred) its assets to.

Maybe while they figure out who all has the license, but this doesn't seem the disaster that Geneon's bankruptcy was, just a huge restructuring.

About the only thing I own from ADV is RahXephon. Princess Tutu was on my long list, but my biggest hope for them was that their CPM purchases would see a new release of Utena in the future. Hopefully that possibility hasn't vanished, and these new companies will keep the ball rolling.

Good lord, change the article title. Lots of people are taking this to mean that this is exactly like the Geneon collapse, whereas actually reading the details makes it sound like that ADV is basically being divided up into smaller chunks.

There's no actual evidence that all of their titles won't be distributed anymore. We don't know what's happening yet.

Although really, that "will continue its operations" bit at the start of the article should have been a tip off.

At least half of my collection are ADV titles.

Thank you so much for Evangelion, Nerima Daikon Bros, Air TV, Noir, Utawarerumono, Nadesico, Hoshi no Koe, Peacemaker Kurogane, and many others.

Another big distributor is down.

Now that just leaves FUNi, Bandai, Nozomi/RightStuf, and Media Blasters =\
Don't forget about Viz & AnimEIGO. Smile

^ AnimEigo's not really a factor anymore unless you're one of those handful of people that are buying Yawara!

I know whats happening.. This is a sham! ADV and Sentai is the Same thing. They just want to get rid of the ADV Name cause its not needed anymore. They can just use the name Sentai to leave us all in Despair and people know that Sentai is still alive Fans of ADV will feel sorry for them and buy everything they put out. So they can keep getting Anime to leave us all in Despair with there Crappy sub-only DVD's.. Well Played ADV... Well played. I actually fell for it for a second, I take back my words of sorrow. The Despair will not end until Sentai Completely goes away!

Thank god. They're finally putting this corpse in its casket. It's been pathetic for years.

It's a little sad that such a once-mighty licensor is put to rest, but honestly, it's no shocker whatsoever.

So long, ADV. Your titles were a mixed bag, your dubs were terrible, but your enthusiasm was strong.

ADV Dubs were pretty good:

AzuDaioh
Kanon
Air
Princess Tutu

....

Continuing with the off-topic discussion...Azumanga Diaoh and Kanon were TERRIFIC dubs. And I really enjoyed most of the word in RahXephon.

If I had the money, that would me. It's on my wish list.

Off topic, I know, but I never miss the chance to pitch an Urasawa title.
