Delhi High Court Grants Injunction to Disney to Block 37 Illegal Steaming Sites

Indian Internet service providers to block 118 domains

The Delhi High Court passed an injunction on Monday, directing Internet service providers to block 118 domains for alleged piracy of licensed content. Disney Enterprises “and others” filed the case against "KIMCARTOON.TO & ORS." and 37 "pirate" websites. The next hearing on this case will be on September 1.

Justice Rajiv Shakder passed the injunction, stating that the defendants are restrained from "hosting, streamlining, reproducing, distributing, making available to the public and/or communicating to the public or facilitating the same on their websites through the Iinternet in any manner whatsoever, any cinematograph work, content, program and show in which the plaintiffs have copyright." The order further states that the injunction also applies to "mirror/redirect/alphanumeric websites" established by the defendants.

The application filed by Disney also addressed India's Department of Communications and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Section 80 along with Section 151 of the Code of Civil Procedure. Accordingly, Delhi High Court directed these government bodies to inform local Internet service providers to block the domains listed in the order. The court can also expand the injunction by adding more domains. Several of the listed domains include "anime" in their names, and others focused on anime and other animated works.

The Disney+ Hotstar streaming service offers access to anime titles such as Shin-chan and Doraemon. Disney also airs titles from Shin-chan, Doraemon, Pokémon, Beyblade, and other anime franchises on Indian television on Disney Channel, Hungama TV, and Marvel HQ.

21st Century Fox launched the Hotstar streaming service in February 2015. Disney India combined the service with its Disney+ streaming service in February 2020.
