Netflix Reveals 3 Anime Works by Japanese Studios, Pacific Rim Animated Show

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

Netflix announced in its Singapore slate event on Thursday that it will offer five new animation titles, including at least three by Japanese studios. One series is Cagaster of an Insect Cage, an adaptation of Kachō Hashimoto's Mushikago no Cagaster manga. Koichi Chigira (Tokyo Babylon, Full Metal Panic!, Last Exile) is directing the anime at GONZO. Screenshots are shown below. Netflix describes the anime:

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious disease “Cagaster” turns people into giant murderous insects, this manga-based series follows the struggle of a young couple to stay alive.

The manga ran on Hashimoto's website from 2005 to 2013, and Tokuma Shoten eventually published seven volumes of the manga from January to June 2016. (The first two volumes shipped simultaneously in the first month.)

The second title from a Japanese studio is titled Yasuke. Netflix describes the show's story:

In a war-torn feudal Japan of mechs and magic, a retired ronin must take up his sword when he is charged with the task of transporting a mysterious child who dark forces want to eliminate.

The story's protagonist is based on the historical figure Yasuke, a samurai of African origin who served under Oda Nobunaga during Japan's Warring States period in the 16th century.

LeSean Thomas (Children of Ether, Cannon Busters, The Boondocks) is credited as creator, director, and executive producer for Yasuke, and Flying Lotus is composing the music and serving as executive producer. Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You) is voicing Yasuke. MAPPA (Yuri!!! on Ice, Kakegurui) is producing the animation.

Another title is an Altered Carbon "feature" based on Netflix's live-action science-fiction series of the same name. The work will "explore new elements of the story mythology." Dai Sato (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eureka Seven, Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy) and Tsukasa Kondō are credited as writers for the project. Anima is producing the animation.

Netflix is also offering the animated series based on the live-action Pacific Rim films. Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson are the co-showrunners on the series by Legendary Entertainment, and the story will "follow two siblings - an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister - who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents."

Additionally, Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson at Jakarta- and Singapore-based studio BASE Entertainment are producing an animated series based on the Filipino graphic novel Trese with Jay Oliva as the executive producer. Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo's graphic novel centers on Alexandra Trese, a supernatural investigator who solves crimes in the city of Manila where figures from Filipino mythology interact with the modern world.
