There are now a quite few franchises in which military hardware tale the form of teenage girls. Funny how Kantai Collection has been the one to really stand out and become big when it is not that different to its brethren.

Maybe, just maybe... because in KanColle, they combine anthropo-moe-fied military stuffs (in this case, ships) with, er, patriotic sentiments.

In fact, everything is very simple - KC gone the similar way of Touhou, offering a huge pile of truly individual characters, but giving to fandom only the basis for creation, allowing their ideas disclosing to the full extent. Add a signature Japanese nationalism idea, and of a fairly strong military-popular genre in the last few years, and it's done.

Not to mention the great opportunities in marketing plan of Kadokawa that constantly heating interest in KC among Japan.

There's also like a hundred girls with more be adding so there's enough to go around for everyone to find their ship waifu.

Not to mention what's about to come, or at least planned; Earlier this year the game developer behind Kantai Collection, DMM, announced the 'next' big thing, Oshiro Collection, essentially anthropomorphized castles, and later Ore Tower, anthropomorphized tools and vehicles.

Whether either of those two can come anywhere close to topple Kantai remains to be seen, though I have some doubts...
