One interesting moment from Saturday worth noting: as always, a contingent of local religious types showed up with banners and megaphones on the convention center mall to tell all of us that we're going to hell for liking anime/dressing in cosplay/eating chocolate/singing in the shower/whatever. Their appearance has become so punctual that you can set a watch to it, and as always, a group of Jesus cosplayers was out to "welcome" them with dancing and sarcasm-laced handshakes. Usually the ritual ends there, but this year, a few clever fans took the lampooning of the religious group a step further by making signs and holding a protest of their own... about nothing. Some of the signs seen on the mall implored passers by to "be themselves", remind them that "Dizzy loves them", and a number of other signs that ranged from the passionate to the bizarre.

LOL! That is awesome.

I never understood why the religious folks even bother anymore. The Anime community only makes them look like tools and they aren't convincing anyone with the whole "You're going to hell for cosplaying a school girl!" ordeal. If "God" didn't want me to like Anime then "He" wouldn't have "created" it in the first place. People and their ridiculous, religious, logic always cracks me up.

When I was dressed as CardCaptor Sakura's Sakura at Anime Expo 2005 this one lady pointed at me to her children and said "See! This is a prime example of a devil worshipper. She is going straight to hell for this!". Riight....I am going to hell for wearing an innocent looking costume. Wouldn't she be at risk for going to hell for judging random strangers? Confused

Well, anime is more of a thing born out of human free will and imagination, really... something kind of allowed to exist in the world by God, just as much as books and films and any kind of fiction or creative work. At least some of this imagination may have been God-inspired, and some may have not.... it can be difficult sometimes to discern what God wants out (or difficult to face the sometimes-obvious truth of what He wants), seeing how everyone's tastes and justifications are so subjective as to what type of fiction is "good." I mean, there are some people out there that think that anything that's written that wasn't in the Bible originally is sinful. On one last note regarding this segment: the existence of something in the world, particularly things created out of free will or imagination, doesn't mean that God "likes" it and wants people to "like" it. As a small example, just because the Greeks and Romans fashioned for themselves gods to worship doesn't mean God "approves" of other believing them.

Aw, that's a rather mean thing to say, not to mention rather silly.

Well, I guess so, if you subscribe to the belief that whether one goes to heaven or hell is entirely dependent on a scale that balances out "good deeds/works" with "bad deeds/works," and the judging others puts more weight on the "bad deeds/works" end. Though I don't personally know any authentic Christian that believes that. For more on that biblical precedent for "not judging others", here's a rather insightful commentary on that passage, if you're interested.

Huh... this was way too theological on a post regarding Day 2 of Fanime Con. So, uh.... was it nice weather that day? Seemed like a nice convention... haven't been to a con since Kunicon 2005 in STL. Oh, that was fun~~ [insert reminiscing about completely unrelated convention].

Notice how I used quotations? I'm just going by what people have said on how God created everything in this world. Some people actually believe that your imagination/creativity is a sign from God.

I'm not religious so to me its all just nonsense.

As another outside observer of the realm of religion, but still finding it interesting, I like to ponder what prompts various religious groups to bring themselves to anime conventions.

1) Functionality: getting your voice out, for what you believe is a good cause, to the most number of people in the shortest amount of time. So if this is true I would expect to also see them at auto/boat shows, sporting events and various trade shows.

2) Religious organizations like to target youth and anime conventions tend to represent a large proportion of that youthful demographic.

3) Perception: believers view attendees of anime cons as being preoccupied with the interests of "sinful" things like violence, sex and various "ungodly" things in modern culture as if we're like this every day. They must not realize outside of the convention scene we just return to being office workers, students, homemakers, military etc, just like any person you'd see on the street. Heck even many of us are Christians, Muslims, Jewish and other faiths.

I just ignore bible thumpers and have fun at the conventions I go to. But if I run across any of them again at Expo, I'll ask this exact same question and see what kind of answer I get. Anyone else wanna try it? Maybe we can compare answers.

What I would give to see a CardCaptor Sakura cosplayer strike up a conversation about Predestination and Determinism with a protester Laughing

Saturday also had a really great panel put on by Gilles Poitras on Anime and Manga for Grownups. I dragged all my friends there for my selfish interest, but they actually enjoyed it as well, and they are not manga readers like I am.

The manga titles discussed were: Bokurano Ours, Cross Game, Bunny Drop, Blue Spring, Silent Mobius, House of Five Leaves, Crows Zero, Twilight of the Dark Master, Ooku, Ghost Talkers.

The anime titles I didn't take as good notes on, but I remember him discussing Doomed Megalopolis, Gundam 0083, Sword of the Stranger, Ashita no Joe (Champion Joe), and Summer Wars.

And non-fiction resource books were: Boys Love Manga, Reading Japan Cool, Frames of Anime, and Straight From the Heart.

I believe he puts this on every year with different titles. If so, this will become a Fanime staple for us. I bought three manga of the ones he listed to try out.
