Perhaps a newsworthy item: earlier this month, the first issue of ELD Magazine was released. It focuses entirely on English language doujinshi and has been put together quite well. A landmark achievement for the doujin scene outside of Japan!
Site is here. |

Well this should be intresting in how well it does. The only other English doujinshi magazine or English doujinshi I'm aware of at all are Austrilian ones.

This one is about doujinshi, it doesn't carry any actual stories (the Australian 'zines I know of are all doujin anthologies But I could be wrong, of course ) |

Ok then. I'm confused. Is it a how to make doujinshi magazine? Or something like comic party? If it's how to make doujinshi, well I won't even bother with the magazine. I have enough of the How to Draw Manga books that teach me all I need to know about producing manga, and the lesser known doujinshi.

So is it about the whole Doujinshi culture? I really don't like the ones I've read.
Are those How to Draw Manga books any good? The ones I looked through (not than I can draw a straight line) seemed to show examples of "american manga", and I could tell pretty easily that the art wasn't Japanese. Anyone who wants to know more about manga, pick up "Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga!". It basically parodys every form of manga in existance (some which I don't even know about) and is the funniest manga currently on the market. |

No, it's not like those 'how-to' books . The closest thing that you'll find in ELD are tips for artists on how to increase readership and what etiquette to follow. There are several reviews of English-language doujinshi (including some from outside the US) which gives a good impression of what is being produced in this community right now. Also noteworthy is the interview with longtime circle Umbrella Studios and a nice set of prints by Fanmix Studios.
There is a thorough article about Comic Party (not just the anime), written by an artist who has experience with Japanese doujin events. It's interesting to read how it compares to the real thing |

You have to make sure you get the real How to Draw Manga series for the good books. I got a bunch of the knockoffs for Christmas, and their style was the American anime manga style, and didn't really teach me anything. They annoyed me, and if I didn't throw them out they're probably buried deeply under other books on my bookself. The "Real" How to Draw manga series I'm talking about is a series of books that was originally Japanese, but was translated into English. Each book focuses on a different aspect of creating a manga, and really goes into detail about it. I find them very useful. http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/htbooks.html That's the series I'm talking about |

I think it is a great idea! English doujin fans are completely ignored and overlooked. This mag appears to be dedicated to 'becoming a doujin-ka' as opposed to 'how to draw'. Looks like Industry interviews, tips for marketing, you can send them flyers for your doujin and they will include them in the mags (for FREE), give reviews, etc.
Now, the question will be how professional it will ACTUALLY be, or is it just 3 HS cartoonists with too much time on their hands... |

Correct! They are filling a huge gap in the English doujin community. It's something that is very much needed in speeding up the development of foreign artists.
I have the first issue here and it looks very promising. It's reproduced in full-bleed b/w digital print and has a color cover. Even thought the staff is not that big yet, I'm pretty amazed with what work they have done so far and can't wait to see what will happen when they get all the support they deserve |
