I'll repost what I said in the Aniplex Thread:
Madoka and Sayaka are OK, but everyone else is really good; Mami and Homura in particular. I expect this to be a case where, since everyone else around them is really good, Madoka and Sayaka's VA's will get better by the third or fourth episode by virtue of working with good talent. Not to mention Von David has directed some pretty good dubs. I'm so glad I can stop worrying about the quality of the dub now.

Yet another reason for me to buy this one. The dub sounds decent and not littered with the usual subjects which is always a plus. The only thing keeping me from deciding to purchase this now is my very tight budget and Aniplex holding off on releasing the series in a complete box set or at least half box set. Guess I'll be waiting on that.

Just copying and pasting some of what I said on another board in reaction to the trailer. There's a bit of pre-emptive "damage"-control that I'm doing below, so if you feel like you're ready to jump the gun on expressing any particularly strong or sharp opinions on the dub, I'd recommend taking a look at this little "disclaimer."
Quote: | [...] Save for the small & short inclusion of Kyoko, it seemed to be pretty much the exact same as the first Japanese-language trailer that Aniplex USA put out, with the matching bits of dialogue and tone and everything.
Admittedly, I think it's something that you'll only be more acceptant of, or at least be more ready to "evaluate," after seeing the trailer a few times over. The first time I saw it, I think there was some combination of anxiety, slight cringing and just being weirded out... man, it really is hard to separate the original seiyuu from the characters, isn't it? (Never having followed an un-dubbed anime so passionately or for so long before, it was a new experience for me.) Upon playing back through some of the audio, and thinking of the context of the scenes in which the trailer's dialogue is said (not to mention how relatively little talk-time is allotted for the characters that aren't Madoka herself)... there is still a lot of potential to be found here, and it is definitely too early to make any major judgments. For example, Sayaka's voice might sound a bit grating in the trailer, but thinking about the context of the scene that she says her dialogue, and thinking back to how the original seiyuu sounded as she playfully talked about making Madoka her wife, it's probably much more appropriate than not. (added in after original post on that "other" board: Not to mention, well, she isn't exactly the most subtle teenage girl. I'm sure she'll do a beautiful job in those more emotional and tragic moments later on in the series) |

I'm sorry but that dub sounds horrible. I love my fair share of dubs, maybe this one will get better, but maybe not.
I really want to hear more of it to make a final judgement of it.

I like Sayaka, Hitomi, and Homerun. I don't care for Madoka or Mami's voice personally. Though maybe I just need to hear Mami more. Why would they give Hitomi like 3 times more dialogue in the trailer than Mami? o_0

*sigh* The more I see of this series, the less I'm motivated to continue it. I have a feeling I'm gonna regret pre-ordering the first volume, but I figure it's short, so I got nothing to lose.

I have to agree. For me, not only are the voices pretty bad, or rather the acting itself...but it also seems to change the whole mood of the show. They make it feel like a happier Magical Girl show than it really. I NEVER got that feeling with the regular Japanese cast. They were also more peaceful..softer in their tones , calmer. Everyone in this trailer sounds like they're trying far too hard and it makes me wonder if they even watched the show before doing their lines. I think it's an important part of dubbing to know how the characters acted originally.. When you're the original voice..do what you want..but a dub should be just that. These voices completely destroyed the mood of the show for me. Next to all the KEY anime dubs from ADV/Sentai, this is the most cringe-worthy dub trailer I've ever heard.

That's how it pretty much was in the first long official trailer released for Madoka Magica. As I noted above, with the exception of the Kyouko clip and audio sample, it's essentially an English dubbed trailer/translation of that aforementioned TROLLING Japanese trailer, using the same kinds of dialogue and happy mood and such.
ed. note: The above was bolded and underlined for those that might be more misunderstanding where the trailer's coming from in its mood, tonality; the increased emphasizing was meant more for the poster below you, Megiddo.

I get the same feeling, that the voices are too overly happy and cute. However, this could also easily go either way.
At the start of the story, everything in this story starts out really sugary sweet, it's diabetic. But as most of us should know by now, as the story plays out, this shit gets REAL. The overly cute portrayal in the beginning could evolve into something darker as the story advances. It could show how the sweet and innocence of young girls becomes broken over time.
Of course, like I said, this can be a double-edged blade. Remember, George Lucas tried the same thing by making Vader a little boy at first, and we all know how that played out.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOokay

what? All animation is dubbed sweetie, the only thing that changes as it travels from one county to another is the language. What they should be emulating is the characterization of each of the characters in the show, not anyone's previous performance. Also correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the scenes that were in that trailer were from very early in the series before shit hits the fan and things got real. I'd be more concerned with the mood being so light if the scenes being shown were from the latter half of the series. Imo, there's nothing disconcerting about this, after all the trailer is like a minute in a half isn't it jumping the gun a bit to say an entire series is ruined based on less than two minutes of sound bites?

From what this trailer is showing me, the dub is nowhere near as good as the Japanese version, but it isn't horrible. I could live with it.
I am however a bit disappointed that Aniplex didn't go all-out on the dub for such a top-tier title like this. Although, I suppose it isn't necessary to have a good dub for a release like this, Aniplex could have made this release sub-only and there still would have been huge interest. So, we're probably lucky to have a dub at all.
And yet, if you are going to go for a dub, then at least put a bit of effort into it. Like I said, the dub doesn't sound horrible, it is probably going to be quite passable. But it doesn't do the characters the same sort of justice that the original Seiyuu did, and that is a shame.

You have got to be kidding me

I like Kyubey and Sayaka. That's about it really. Oh well, I'm not buying it so it doesn't matter.

For everyone who's saying this is "too happy," this trailer is the same "misleading" Japanese trailer with English text and voices. It's supposed to be misleadingly "happy and too cheerful" without all the signature SHAFT visuals.
Aniplex USA is doing the same thing the Japanese did. Take a look at the official English Madoka site.
