Y'know, I like viz's deal better, since naruto is subtitled. I'd be much more motivated to watch the samples if they were in Japanese. Sorry, but this doesn't really fit my purposes.
It'd be pretty cool if Mushishi were subtitled.

I'm the opposite. Dubbed is the way for me. Also, this fits in line with something I remember from when ADV was allowing Crunchyroll to show some of NHK. With that they basically said that the English version is what they're responsible for so naturally they want to promote it. I obviously don't know for sure if that's the thinking here, but that's what makes sense to me.

But joost carries subtitled versions of other anime titles so FUNi could be less stingy with the subtitles versions. People who download fansubs aren't doing it for the English dub.

It's nice to see that some of these episodes are giving the option for either subs or dubs. So much of the legal on line content out there (not just anime) is dub only, which has never made sense to me given the digital format.

This appears to be much of the same stuff that Funimation has been airing on it's YouTube channel. There's tons of other streaming sites they could host their stuff on as well.
And most people who download fansubs do it because they just want the show, regardless of whether it's dub or sub. People will download dubs as well. Please don't turn this into a dub vs sub debate.

No one's turning this into a sub vs dub. So chill.
People who download are downloading English subtitled for the most part. If FUNi is doing this to combat the fansubs that are still in distribution, then FUNi needs to put more subbed stuff up there.
If FUNi is doing it to advertise their work, then what they're doing is fine but they are excluding a part of the audience. FUNi should offer both in all of their titles.

But are they downloading it subtitled for the most part because they have an honest preference, or simply because the vast majority of downloadable anime out there is subtitled...particularly the just-released episodes that most people would be watching in the first place? Personal preference obviously has some impact, but I highly doubt you'd see every single Naruto fan drop the series if, by some magical turn of circumstances, the only way it was available was in dubbed form. It's really a matter of convenience.
Note that I'm not arguing that FUNi shouldn't offer streams of both languages, as far as it is able to. The technology exists, so such a request seems reasonable. At the same time, though, the dubbed version of the show is FUNi's primary product, so if the option exists to only make available one version, it only makes sense that they would go with the dubs.
