Wow... only one day for each episode? I wonder how many people might get screwed over, in Japan and outside, due to bandwidth restrictions?

From what I understand, Ef - A Tale of Melodies is sort of like a prequel so I guess it's okay to watch it first Anime smile

No ISP in Japan has any bandwidth restrictions.

You get what you pay for here Smile.

Like Ef - a Tale of Memories, it tells two stories, one is before the events of Memories, one is after. It's still recommended that you watch it after Memories as that is an interpretation on Ef - The First Tale and Melodies is an interpretation of Ef - The Latter Tale.

AFAIK, this is not correct. One day free streaming is for 720x480 high-quality non-DRM flash video streaming on official website. After that, they're going to air the latest episode in AnimateTV with lower resolution and a little bit of DRM but still with no IP restriction.

That's correct; as written in the article, there is the free Flash stream on the official website with no DRM, and the free Windows Media stream on the Animate.TV website with DRM. Animate.TV has already started its streaming.

BTW, anyone can also watch some Japanese TV networks live and free, if you don't mind the ads and timezone difference (it's live, after all):

A Japanese company is providing a shareware streaming TV viewing program
called "Keyhole TV" that is being used by a few Japanese broadcast TV
Stations to send out their regular programming to the web. Currently, TV
Tokyo, Nihon TV, TV Asahi and a few others are making use of this program,
which means that you can install this software and watch those channels
live, via a small screen with a fairly poor video quality. ("Keyhole" is a
very apt name for this software, because you aren't going to get a "Big
Screen Feeling" with this.)

I've installed "Keyhole" TV and sure enough, the usual Japanese TV
broadcasting is available. For me, that's at a 13 hour time difference,
which means that I'm not usually around when most anime are shown, but I
have caught the last couple minutes of a few.

Oddly enough, a Swiss TV channel is also using this system, as is CNBC (for
whatever reason) and a couple of Japanese radio stations.

As far as I can tell, there wasn't any spyware or malware associated with
the download and installation of "Keyhole". There also doesn't appear to be
any way to record off of the broadcasts, but I suppose some skilled-enough
programmer could probably figure out a way, but I'm not sure why anyone
would bother since the quality is pretty bad.

In any event, if you have never watched Japanese TV, it's worthwhile
installing Keyhole TV just to see what you are "missing". If you have seen
Japanese TV, you will already know why no one will spend much time on this,
other then if they can time themselves to be around for anime broadcasts.

And of course, you will be limited to those anime series that are being
broadcast on the channels that are available. Those channels appear to
change from time-to-time, and I suspect that this service may eventually be
overrun with Japanese Shopping Channels, but it's still interesting to "drop
in" on Japanese TV from time-to-time.

The English language website for Keyhole TV, and the other programs from
Cognitive Research is at:

http://www.v2p.jp/video/english/index.html

BTW - the instruction manual is in Japanese, but the control buttons on
Keyhole TV are in English.

Though I'm still not quite sure which stories are being told in Melodies, that's a bit off. Memories animated the Kei/Mizuki/Hirono story from the First Tale and the Chihiro/Renji story from the Latter Tale.

Aside from that, this is great news! I will be sure to take advantage of being able to watch a series I've been greatly looking forward to legally.

Well that's great and all..... For Japanese people. If it doesn't have English subtitles though, then I don't care.

Hmm, very cool. I'm watching the original on CR. So far it's very good, and I imagine this will be as well.

I'm really glad they're doing this, Minori, not the DRM one, since I loathe anything DRM, but yes, whoever was hoping that it would be as good as the first one, It is. I've probably watched it a couple or three times. Also, yes, you will want to watch the first part - ef-melo, because the Renji/Chihiro route is integral to the Kuze/Mizuki route. I've played the first game and most of the latter tale game and SHAFT has done a great job keeping the intent of the game there. Anyway, this is one of, if not the best anime coming out this fall, so do yourself a favour and watch it. Oh and good job, minori, for providing that stream Anime smile
