Quick question, does anyone know if there was anything in Japanese legend that might have anything to do with the plotlines of such anime as Ranma, Tenshi na Komaiki, etc.

Could be just the a slightly skewed view of reincarnation. Your spirit doesn't have a sex of its own. Also note Please Save my Earth and Angel Sanctuary would be in a similar catagory.

I'm not sure of any Japanese myths but I know there are alot of Greek/Roman myths that deal with sex change such as Tirsias who wasa man but became female after he hit some snakes with a stick and could only turn back to male by hitting the same snakes
and Iphis who was a girl raised as a boy and eventually was changed into a boy and fell in love with another girl |
