I have recently been abroad in the greater East Asian countries for the last 3 years, only just now returning to the States... and, perhaps not surprisingly while traveling, I have rather fallen behind on my anime viewership.
This weekend I had something of a re-awakening for my love of anime, watching a few of my old favorites (Rahxephon, Eva, FMP) with friends I haven't seen in ages, watching anime in a marathon fashion. The air was rank with nostalgia. I was just wondering is anyone else had any particular habits or rituals they liked to indulge in when coming back to anime after a hiatus (brief or extended). [EDIT: Seeing as how we have a concurrent thread about anime hiatus, I decided to change the title of this thread to match it. -TK] |

Very good question. I love anime, and sometimes I do take breaks, but they are short, and usually are taken because of something, not particularly because I wanted to (although sometimes, with different anime being thrown in your face, and feeling "pressure" on if you need to watch a certain anime because everyone else is, its nice to take a break on that) Other than that, when I do come back from a break from anime, it's like "I haven't seen this in ages! Welcome back!"
As a matter of fact, this has happened to me recently. See, I really like Ranma 1/2, but at one time, the DVD boxsets were utterly expensive. So, I had planned to buy them off ebay, but I got distracted with other anime that I thought I should get then. Well, I decided I am taking a break on other anime, and am now going to finally buy the Ranma 1/2 DVD boxsets, since they are much more affordable. I also buy the manga, and when I read the first volume in 3 years, I was like "Ranma where have you been! It's been ages! What the heck was I thinking?! I should have gotten this a long time ago." Ranma 1/2 was one of my first anime, so I was glad that I would finally be able to buy it like I had always planned. I think I know what you are talking about. |

I always catch up on the latest animes after a hiatus (just to see what I've been missing, what's happened since etc.), then I'll probably go watch some of the older animes that're on my 'I-really-should-get-round-to-finishing-this' list.

I usually just pick a random title off my shelf, regardless of whether I have seen it before or not. It doesn't really take me that long to get "back in the swing" of watching anime, so pretty much any title I choose is a good 'Welcome back' treat for me.

I started watching Saikano yesterday.
The first episode had multiple clichés, a strange premise, mechanised weaponry and gratuitous explosions. And I loved every minute of it. Gone were the troubles of my real, corporeal life. I miss them not. |

It depends on what I feel like watching after coming out a hiatus. If I had bought something new to watch (Example Full Metal Panic) then I will watch that or something that I had already watched to get my spirits up again.

Interesting... coming out of a hiatus huh. I'd say i definatly coudlnt' watch something new to me. You know? Becuase if i come out a hiatus and i watch something that turns out to be a real let down, i might go back into a hiatus or
![]() ![]() Also i'd probably try to induldge myself in the forum, get my mind back on anime. Becuase after a hiatus, i'm not so hyped about anime, well at least not as much as i was before. So it probably woudln't appeal to me as much as it would before. So, in order to help get that appeal back, i'd probably diveinto the forums, reading neraly everything i missed, so it's practically like i was staying on top of thigns; just late (well i guess that ruins the whole expeirence, but still). I think that surrounding myself in anime would defiantly help get the desire to watch more anime, back. But...
I think in this situation it'd be different for myself. I'd probably notice that, during the hiatus, i was going through one. The idea of the hiatus would be more concious because by the time a large enough gap occured in which i watched 0 anime in, i'd notice it becuase of my desire to watch another. I think the idea of a hiatus is you sort of step out of that little boundray and don't have the desire to, or perhaps physically can't, leading to the same affect. So i think that while i would be gone on a trip like that, or some other circumstance that has that affect, i'd be more aware that i'm going through a hiatus and then perhaps it woudln't affect me as much. -Elfen12- |

Honestly, my hiatus-ends are almost always tied to illness- I'm up, I'm going doing what-have-you, then something saps my energy and I just wanna sit down and do nothing. Then I pop in a DVD, and suddenly remember I have all these great series to finish watching (I still have 3 DVDs of ROD the TV to go...)

Hm...my hiatuses are generally caused by lack of time and/or laziness when I do have free time, so the big thing for me is 1. securing a block of time that I know I have free, and 2. actually sitting down and putting the disc in the player. I'm one of those weirdos that gets so bored that nothing sounds fun, so usually my hiatuses are broken by my winning long arguments with myself on whether I should watch anime or use the computer, read books, go exercise, etc. So, um, to answer the question, self-argument?

I can't really call it a hiatus, but honestly my interest in anime dropped to a point where the only anime I was watching was whatever was on [adult swim], and half the time I just had the TV on and wasn't really paying attention. But, after a summer where I watched quite a bit of anime online for the first time ever (mainly because until earlier this year I was still on dial-up). I feel like I have my love for anime again. So along with the stuff I bought last month (Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Please Twins). I'm about to put in a massive online order for a few that caught my eye and just kick back and enjoy it like I used to again (Ai Yori Aoshi, Eiken, Grenadier, Omishi Magical Theater Risky Safety, Please Teacher, and Rumbling Hearts). I think this will do me well in the time being, and it'll boost up my pathetic anime collection.
