I recently came across details on this manga title from Keiko Suenobu focused on the darker aspects of high school which seem to deal with controversial subjects such as rape, self-mutilation, and bullying. I've heard that it received plenty of praise from teenage girls in Japan for its realistic depiction of the pressures faced by teens and a darker side to those pressures.
From what I've heard, 9 volumes of the manga are out in America thanks to Tokyopop right now. Has anyone here read it and if so, would it be worthwhile for me to buy?

Hmm, Life is worth-reading IMO; though it can get pretty melodramatic at times. Every volume keeps pouring onto the drama, but I find myself getting really anxious for the next volume. ^^; Not everything in Life is realistic (Ayumu, the main character, is always getting into some kind of predicament...) but the issues concerning Ayumu are definitely handled in an engaging and dark way. Life's protagonists are likable or at least, sympathetic, while the antagonists can be rather twisted. If anything, you can get an addicting and exciting read out of Life.

The main protagonist always getting in trouble? Kind of sounds like Tsukushi Makino from Hana Yori Dango with her melodrama from nearly the entire student body.

I'm not terribly familiar with Hana Yori Dango, so I can't say I'm too sure about the comparison, but she does get a lot of crap from her fellow peers-- especially from one group of nasty girls who are always plotting against her... though in the most recent volume, it seems like one of the girls has realized how twisted the leader of the group, Manami, really is.

You can take Mean Girls and add a really, almost sadistic twist to it. It's not so much that the main character is getting into trouble. More like she's having trouble trying to cope with the situation that she is in. And she has to deal with quite a bit at her school, with the people she had supposedly been friends with, even teachers. I remember the first time I started reading the series. I read all 12 volumes that were out at the time in 2 hours. I still look out for new volumes, and it really draws you in to find out what will happen with the current situation in the storyline and then what happens in the next. This series right here is probably one of the most addicting ones I've ever read. There was also a live-action drama for it.
