Not being fickle or anything, but isn't re-licensing Grave of the Fireflies kind of redundant considering Section 23 already had distribution rights to whatever leftover properties there were from ADV when the company went out of business a while back?

Why go through the trouble of a remastering for DVD when Ghibli will give us a BD remaster in the near future? :\

Now, if only they'd pick up the other Ghibli films that Disney won't touch, like Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, and maybe even Princess Mononoke- whose US licensee status still seems unclear.

I agree. I've already got Grave of the Firelies on DVD. I don't need to buy it again unless they give us another dub and some extras. The UK has Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday out on DVD. Heck, I'd even like to see some non-Ghibili movies get licensed in the States such as Brave Story, Welcome to the Space Show, Tamagotchi the Movie, etc. The UK has DVD releases for all of those and I don't see why America can't get those titles either. |

Disney supposedly still has them even though Mononoke has been stated not to be a Buena Vista title. Someone has to have them. I can't see these titles falling out. GKids has theatrical and non-theatrical rights though

Well, I'm actually gonna buy it this time. Every time this comes out on dvd it seems to go out of print in a relatively short period, and the prices get pretty high as well.

Glad to see this. There are a handful of anime titles that are important enough that they should never be allowed to be out of print, and this is one of them.

The basic answer is no. I recently asked Sentai/S23 about Soul Hunter (Hoshin Engi) and they said that the didn't have it. They probably only transferred the few popular properties they had at the time. I remember here on ANN some explanations saying that Sentai isn't a name change, it's a new company born from the leftovers of ADV. Still, I'm surprised that Disney didn't corner this one. I'll be the first to admit that not every Ghibli film is a winner, but I would think one as iconic and renowned as Grave of the Fireflies would be an easy target. I mean, they just re-released Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky for Blu-Ray, so they aren't afraid of doing older titles. |

Princess Mononoke was distributed through one of Disney's sister companies in the form of Miramax last I recall, though I was unaware that the movie is in licensing limbo until just now. As for Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves, the licensing rights to both appear to be getting sat on by Disney as they've announced no plans of distributing them onto video.
The reasoning for Disney not acquiring Grave of the Fireflies is sort of complex to explain. To make a long story short, Ghibli is a subsidiary of the Japanese media publisher known as Tokuma Shoten and Disney's deal with Ghibli was actually made through Tokuma so they could acquire theatrical and video distribution rights to Ghibli titles released through the company. Disney can't touch Grave of the Fireflies because a different media company called Shinchosa was responsible for producing it alongside Ghibli and owns the rights to it. Ghibli was pulling double duty in 1988 creating both Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro and required funding from another media company to help them through Grave of the Fireflies. Shinchosa assisted with helping Ghibli with GotF while Tokuma assisted with My Neighbor Totoro. |

I'm glad to hear this will be back in print, as I was surprised to see it drop out of online retailers recently. I'm still not sure if it's a movie I want to own, just because of how difficult it would be to watch even once, but at least I have the option now.

It was suspected that the CPM license to Grave of the Fireflies lapsed, hence why that DVD went OOP. |

Wow, that actually explains a lot. I knew both movies came out at the same time, but I didn't know that they were produced by two different companies. It makes sense, thinking it about. How else could they fund two movies at once? Still, Disney isn't some small company. I would think Lassetter himself could have pushed Disney to pick it up from Shinchosa. Well, whatever. I guess the real point is that it's here to disturb a whole new generation of anime fans. I imagine it would be fun to show this to a bunch of new-school fans brought in by Naruto and Haruhi and then watch their reactions!!

It's not like there weren't plenty of happy cheery anime when it was made, and there are "disturbing" ones that younger/new-school fans are watching now such as When They Cry and Death Note. Personally, I find Haruhi and Naruto somewhat disturbing (being Mikuru would royally suck, and the kids in Naruto are basically child soldiers), I'll still watch them both, but I actually prefer Grave of the Fireflies in a way, because for all the horror of the children's situation, the film's compassion and empathy and love are palpable, I'd much rather watch that that some anime about a boy who presents an aesop about why it's wrong for anyone with a penis to cry if they aren't moppet aged. Or where one of the main female characters is constantly being sexually harrassed and has to put up with it because if they don't spoiler[it could destroy the universe]. I feel similarly about Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, always makes me cry, but it's cathartic rather than despairing because there's so much love there. |
