O_O I was not expecting this to get a negative review.

The anime was great and I don't even watch shoujo anime.

But I imagine the manga lacks the same level of humor that comes from the excellent voice acting (especially Morita...).

It's not hard to have a mediocre manga and an awesome anime, or visa versa (usually the anime is the one that's lacking but not in this case).

Also, WTF? How is Hagu repulsive? She's adorable (just kind of freakish). Although not really what you'd consider romance fodder...

Wow, that was a really negative review. I got volume 1 for airport reading and found it to be somewhat enjoyable although I didn't enjoy it enough to pick up volume 2. It feels a bit to me like Here is Greenwood. The series didn't see to cohere enough for me to want to read more, but since I had only heard good things about the series I assumed it would get better later.

I was expecting yet another glowing review and I was pleasantly surprised to find otherwise. It's a decently enjoyable series (some of the time; other times its quite dull) but I really don't see what all the fuss is about (the manga or the anime, I've experienced both).

While I like a lot of stuff that is considered "moe", Hagu is my biggest problem with the series. I'm not a fan of the whole "She may look like she's 5 but she's 18, we swear!" thing and the fact that she tends to act like she looks is even worse. She's not an interesting character on her own and she's even worse as a romantic interest.

The series also likes to get all poetic and pop-philosophical about one's direction in life, but that aspect really doesn't work for me.

Wow.

I am shocked. Really shocked.

I admit, I was slow to warm to H&C. I'm not a huge fan of slice of life as I usually find it to be really slow. And I don't think this series has a really strong beginning, but once things get going, I just fell in love with it. I just finished watching the first series of the anime, which I managed in a few days even though I should have been sleeping most of the time, and it really is my new great anime/manga love.

I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone, but I don't think this review does it any justice at all. Even when I didn't like it, I never thought it was bad per say, just not my thing.

As for comparing the anime and the manga, they are pretty much exactly the same. Yes, both mediums have differences, but I don't think you could call one mediocre and the other great, because they are too close.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who wasn't swept away by Honey and Clover. I really was looking for a good slice of life manga and had heard so much, but yeah, Hagu is not interesting at all and I'm not a fan of the artwork. Coupled with a story that seems mediocre at best in the two volumes I saw and it didn't seem worth spending any more money on. I'm not saying I won't try it again, if it becomes available in the library.

Wow. I wasn't too impressed with what little I've seen of the anime either, but this is a harsh review. I'm sure there are some things to like about it, since a lot of my friends love it, and I think they have pretty good taste...

Most folks have seen the anime first, which is how Honey and Clover became an underground hit. I've seen all three anime titles (2 TV series and the OVA), the live-action movie, and the live-action TV series and enjoyed them all. I admit that as I read the manga, I am surprised to see it spawned all of the above-mentioned items, but it isn't that bad.

Had I read the manga first, would I have been as keen on watching any of the spawned series? Maybe not. Still, reading the manga reminds me of the good times I had in the various series I watched.

I watched the anime, bought the 1st and 2nd manga. I like H&C. I read the first manga and I felt I was watching the anime again. So similar.

Um...Wow, just wow. I think that was a bit too harsh. O_O;;;

Anyways, while I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, I thought the manga was good. I guess it's because I have a weakness for quirky, nonsensical characters. I liked how the strangeness of the series had those glimpses of realness where you could totally to a character.

Yeah, the manga is a little too laid back sometimes. It all depends on your mood. It's not one of those mangas I'd pick up if I were looking for something to pass the time. It requires some attention span, and it's something I'd read if I wasn't in the mood for drama. Not to mention, it doesn't leave you wanting more. I felt content after reading volume 1, but I didn't feel the need to to instantly read volume 2 like I do with really good shoujo. It doesn't leave you wanting more because the manga doesn't feel very motivated.

While Hagu does have a lolicon appearance, I wouldn't call her repulsive. She isn't 100 percent cuteness and moe. She sort of has a quirky, Yotsuba feel to her, atleast to me. Though I do agree it's kind of creepy for college aged students to like her.

Wait, wait, wait... did someone just call Hagu repulsive? Does... not... compute...

I know the manga might get more praise than it deserves because of the anime's success, but this review was just harsh. The negative comments about Hagu came off as a wee bit sexist, too. There is nothing moe or lolicon about her -- she's just a short shy country girl living in the city for the first time. But a female mangaka drawing a quiet, kind little girl? SOUND THE ALARMS, THIS MUST BE AN ATTACK ON WOMEN!

As a female, the reviewer's warped perception of Hagu makes me feel sick. I love a big strong heroine as much as the next girl, but are girls not allowed to be short and shy, too?

I crowneth thee worst review ever.

I fully agree. I haven't read this series, but I was interested in picking it up because of the image of the girl on the cover, I thought she looked sweet and adorable.
But sweet and adorable is something negative now? e_e Seems to be harsh times for the moe fan... and to be honest, I find the bashing of it alot more sexist than the bashers think what they are bashing is.
One of my best friends at university is small, sweet and innocent. She's 19, but has a cute face and looks much younger so we're always calling her adorable/moe, which she takes as a compliment. Granted, she's quite accomplished and intelligent as well (having to live alone as she's an overseas student from Hong Kong and taking the sort of computer and maths subjects I cant even begin to get my head around). Does that make her repulsive?
I'm all for varying reviews on things, but that one little section really hit a nerve with me.
