I just came across some info on this early 80's series that lend itself to make me believe it may have had some influence on Escaflowne and perhaps Evangelion.
I couldn't find a review of the series here at ANN and was hoping someone could tell me more about the series - how it looks, character development, animation, etc. I really enjoyed Escaflowne and may be interested in investing in this series. Thanks! |

Don't let the cover art of the DVDs fool you, as the actual show don't even look half as good. The animation of this show is really bad, and the design is pretty outdated. So if you are the kind that only enjoy nice clean animations, you might want to stay away from this. I have seen some episodes years ago, but not enough to get the full scope of the story. But it is definitely a classic, and the mecha concept is pretty innovative back then in the early 80's. If you enjoy shows like Votoms, or the first Gundam TV, you might enjoy this show.
AnimeOnDvd.com might have some reviews. |

I'm currently watching this anime on the Anime Network and it is very good in my opinion. The creator of Gundam made this series before the Gundam series and this had a big influence on it. Aura Battler Dumbine is basically about people who get transported into a different world from the present day to use Aura Battlers. Aura Battlers are like Gundams but you control them with your Aura. They are brought to this different world to fight in a rivalry between to groups of people. <<(I forgot the names) If you liked Gundam or Eva I suggest you check this out. In my opinion its very good.

You're right, it has the first four DVDs reviewed. I think I might pick up the first DVD of this title. Since this was made by Gundam creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, it'll be a good classic to have in my (extremely small) collection. Plus it didn't fare all that badly in AoD's reviews. |

Dunbine did get decent reviews there. It's peaked my interest enough I think I'll be picking the dvd's up as they come out. Thanks everyone!

Dubine is a classic, ranking up there with Ideon and some of the other Tomino clasics that came out in a time when he was known as "kill em all" for his style of concluding his series.
The animation is definitely different from today's anime (shot on cheaper film, character designs reminiscent of a different time, etc) If you are new to anime, it may not be your thing. I find that lots of younger fans don't necessarily appreciate the style of the older stuff, which is not to say anything bad about younger anime fans, but unless you saw/lived through what the level of animation was for most US shows at that time, it's hard to appreciate how incredibly good these shows were... j |

Dunbine is the first in what I call the Tomino 80s Trilogy. Tomino's L-Gaim replaced it's time slot when it ended, and Zeta Gundam replaced L-Gaim. The improvement in budget and style between the three series is amazing considering each series lasted only one year. They have many thematic similarities as well as of course the spoiler[kill em all] endings. Although ZZ followed after Zeta, with Sunrises' Dragonar and Borgman IIRC, I consider the Tomino Trilogy superior in theme and writing (even if Tomino did do ZZ) Yutaka Izubuchi who does the mecha designs for Dunbine helped usher in the organic look for mecha. I believe this is where the biggest similarity to Eva exists. Eva did not invent the organic mecha. Much is also owed to Mamoru Nagano's living Motarr Heads.

I can see where Escaflowne could have been influenced by Aura Battler Dunbine but not Evangelion. I used to have all of Aura Battler Dunbine and the other title (Bysons well?) If your a mecha fan and like Escaflowne you might like Aura Battler Dunbine. I found it interesting and entertaining. Art wise it is a little dated and looks similar to Mobile Suit Gundam or Macross. |

Dunbine was made in ealy 80's that's why it looked old.
I love Dunbine's closing song. http://www.gazo-box.com/old-movie/src/1076934883508.wmv |

Yeah,
I bought the CD single with Mio singing that song. It reminds me of her 0083 ending Evergreen! She also sings that heartbreaking ED song on the Area 88 OAV. Her songs are so moving on a deeper level, unlike the typical high energy J-pop in most anime. |
