Has the music in an anime ever ruined the experience of the episode or movie you were watching? Whether it was the opening or ending song, or even the music during the anime itself?

I'm not usually a big music snob when it comes to anime, but for example, the opening song to Wolfs Rain just drove me crazy..."stray"...At first it didn't register to me, but after a few episodes I just couldn't listen to a whole season of that song anymore. I just couldn't do it.

Another anime I didn't give a chance because of the opening song was Lucky Star. It was almost as if the producers were trying to annoy me with that song.

Don't get me wrong I love a lot of music in anime like naruto, bleach and cowboy bebob especially. But when i'm hunting around for something to watch, a poor song(in my opinion) can really turn me off from an anime.

This isn't related to the opening song, but I hated the background music in Chrono Crusade. It was cheesy, melodramatic, and generally boring. Good music enhances the mood of a scene, while bad music sticks out like a sore thumb (to me, at least).

The American release of Initial D...they took out all the awesome eurobeat. It wasn't even an option on the disks, they just came with NO EUROBEAT PERIOD. Since the music was such an integral part of watching the series the entire experience was ruined.

I gotta say the first Appleseed movie. I'm not talking about the music they used for the more gratutious action scenes (the beginning, the car chase scene, etc.); that part of the soundtrack rocked. I mean the incidental crap they had during the dramatic scenes. It was horribly overdone and really, really corny in some parts, especially the massive battle at the end. They made such a big freaking deal about Dive For You being on that soundtrack- would it have killed them to put it at the ending fight scene as well as that two minute snip toward the beginning? The whole movie was pretty sub-par in the first place, but the music just made it worse.

There's also the duel themes from Revolutionary Girl Utena, although I don't hate them as strongly as I did when I first started watching. I was just sort of angry with them because the duels started to get so repetetive after a while, and that five-minute sequence with Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku was in every single episode.

Not really, I have to admit.

If I find the opening or ending themes distasteful, I'd just skip them (though I can't recall the last time that I actually found a theme that I disliked). Bad BGM doesn't exactly "ruin" the experience for me either, it only moves that specific show from the "serious" bin to the "lulz, B-movie" bin.

I think one of the worst soundtracks I've heard for an anime is for Blue Submarine No 6. The closing is fine, but the rest of the music is sooo out of place. Other than the terrible selection of music, the show itself is fine. But the music is just....[/b]

I really don't like the second OP/ED for Death Note. It doesn't ruin the series itself of course since their just the OP/ED but it doesn't give the same feel that Nightmare did with their songs, "the WORLD", and "Alumina". The visual aspect of it doesn't help either.

OMG... Hahaha, well this is a title fans will just have to read the subtitles then.

Just a curiosity. You don't like jazz in general or just this soundtrack in particular?

You should probably have posted here instead.

I always lost it when the screeching guitar rock of Saiyuki kicked-in. The show already tried way too hard to be cool, but whenever the instrumental version of the opening kicked in I always expected the ninja turtles to jump into the frame and scream "RADICAL DUDE!!!" Of course I only saw about 6 episodes, so I have no idea if this continued for the entire run.

I think the battle music in Evangelion would be more appropriate in an early James Bond film. It's a good job the show more than makes up for this elsewhere.

While I wouldn't say that it ruined my experience of what I thought was a mediocre anime anyway, the opening theme song of Orguss 02 was terrible. It sounded like rusty metal clanging together, and the vocal accompaniment was strained and amateurish.
The ending theme of the first Ghost in the Shell movie, which was an extended version of the opening on the VHS version that I liked very much, was almost completely chopped off and replaced with a lame U2 techno song on the DVD release. That really upset me.Evil or Very Mad

Blue Submarine has the worst music I listened to in an anime *urgh*

Yeah, Wolf's Rain was kind of annoying, although the music was mostly composed by the legend Yoko Kanno (!)...

...still she did a looooooot better in Stand Alone Complex and Cowboy Bebop Very Happy

I thought the second OP/ED was quite nice to listen to because the whole show became more and more serious and colder since the death of xxxxx (won't tell).

Eh, its really a mix of both. I'm not a huge jazz fan (particularly so of freestyle jazz), but the soundtrack felt completely out of place here in my opinion. I think Cowboy Bebop went a bit jazzy at times, but that didn't bother me at all. As long as it can work, I have no problems, but I just didn't feel it did for Blue Submarine No 6.
