After putting all the four seasons' theme songs together and hearing all of them from my CD soundtrack of this anime, I have never heard of any of these artists before. Porno Graffitti Nana Kitade L'Arc-en-Ciel YeLLOW Generation COOL JOKE Crystal Kay ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sowelu Currently, I am more concerned to learn about who Sowelu is. According to Wikipedia, she is probably half-Japanese and half-Italian because her father is Japanese and her mother is half-Japanese and half-Italian. However, knowing that her real name is Aki Harada, why is she addressed as Sowelu? What is a Sowelu? What does it mean? How do you pronounce it? Or could this be just a mistranslation of the artist's spelling to fans outside Japan? Sounds more like fear in language barriers if you ask me. |

It's her stage name. It's the Irish word for sun, and her grandfather came up with it because he's Irish.
Kinda surprised you've never heard of L'arc before, too. I knew about them even when I was just getting into anime and Japanese music, and I don't even know why. They've been around forever and are monumentally popular. |

Well, for L'Arc-en-Ciel, I don't understand how it's possible for this rock group to understand that French word. There is no way they can read that and furthermore, there is also no way they can put partial English lyrics in their Japanese lyrics of their music regardless if they have a language barrier or not. For example, that song "READY STEADY GO", I think they can only write this is katakana formats:
Ruedei Sutedei Canto Hodo Mii Baku Ruedei Sutedei Geibu Mii Gudo Raku Ruedei Sutedei Neberu Ruku Baku Retsu Geto Sutarutedo Ruedei Sutedei Go Even if they write it in katakana's they may consider this a nonsense pronounciation. Am I right? [EDIT: Please stop excessively quoting. -TK] |

Did it ever occur to you that Japanese people are just as capable of learning other languages as anyone else? L'arc does lots of songs with English in them - one of my favorite songs of theirs, Spirit Dreams Inside, is entirely in English. When the lyrics are written out, the Japanese is in kanji and kana, and the English is in the Roman alphabet.

Well, sort of. But in certain situations, even if a Japanese artist or group would perform a song completely in fluent English, that doesn't mean they all can speak the language for communication purposes. In fact, some would never do English lyrics one bit. Another thing I found out unrelated to anime is that there is a Japanese artist named Yuki Koyanagi with the English version of her theme song "Cross Color" featured in Koei's video game, Dynasty Warriors 4. She performed flawlessly in English, but she don't understand a damn thing she said or whatsoever according to my research on internet. How else can you call that but able to learn English for anything?

I'm an American who sings in Japanese quite frequently while understanding very little of the meaning, but that doesn't mean that all Americans who say things in Japanese don't speak the language fluently. The same goes for the other way around. Also, even though the members of L'arc-en-Ciel might not speak fluent French (I can't remember), they at least know that the name of their band means 'rainbow', which is why they chose it.
As for why Japanese singers use English lyrics, it's because to them it sounds cool and exotic, sort of like why some people listen to Japanese music. [EDIT: Please stop excessively quoting. -TK] |
