I was just watching Air episode 12 and I swear that the vocal near the end sounds like the Rose by Bette Midler. Not an exact transcription like the 0083 rip (it is in a different key, but otherwise it is the same song) of James Horner's Glory, but close enough. In the case of 0083 the OVA and original release of the OST 2 do not credit Horner, but the 2 CD collection actually added his name to the credits.
There is that recently made famous Gunbuster song, but that was totally intentional and done consciously. I think that the Time Stranger Goshogun theme sounds similar to Memory in Green by Vangelis from Blade Runner. That FMP preview song sounds so much like the A-team. At the end of Mononoke there is an instrumental which reminds me of another popular song whose name I forget at the moment. I often wonder if these similarities are coincidental, if they are subconsciously influenced, or are done with knowledge of the original. I find it hard to believe that a musician, director and audio mixer, along with whoever else hears the sound mix before release are all completely ignorant of these songs sounding like previously released songs. I have the feeling it is more of a case of "our version is different enough to avoid being sued" for most cases. I'm sure there are many other cases out their that I'm forgetting or have missed but it does seem to happen more in anime than movies and television shows in the States. |
