I saw a Captain Herlock graphic novel listed in the new issue of Official Playstation Magaine and I could've sworn it was attributed to Tokyo Pop, but there's no mention of it on their website.
Anyone know anything baout this? j |

I truly doubt it... If anyone, it'd be Viz since they already released the new GE999 manga couple years ago

As it stands, we can only pray. Matsumoto's work, glorious and influential as it is, has strangely been relegated to cult fan status.

I highly doubt it. English translations of Matsumoto's work has virtually disappeared over the years. IMO it started when GE999 was removed from Animerica and changed to a graphic novel format. I don't even think the GE999 movies has even been released on dvd over here.

Sadly you are correct about the 999 movies.
I have the Japanese box set (which I highly recommend int erms of extras and amstering quality) but Matsumoto never really got his footing back with the new generation of anime fans in the US. I wonder how Cosmo Warrior Zero, Gun Frontier or Harlock Saga did domestically? I didn't particularly like any of them but.... j |

Was the GE999 manga ever finished over here? I gave up on it after it got booted from Animerica. I didn't really care for it after that. The story started out cool, but then it turned into filler which was supposed to eat up pages so Matsumoto could claim that it was longer than the original 999 manga. And how many times are the characters going to whine about Tochiro? spoiler[He's dead, get over it.]

Matsumoto is a weird situation.
While I consider his seminal works, Harlock, 999 and Yamato to be the foundations on which all modern anime was based (well he pretty much inspired just about everyone) I haven't liked a single thing the man has done since then. The entire Matsumoto resurgance has been...rather disappointing on many levels actually. That doesn't mean if some company started reprinting all the classics I wouldn't be on that like a fly on **** j |

I think the major problem with Matsumoto's later work was that he tried to tie every single work he previously did into one big universe. Before this only Harlock and GE 999 were connected. If you want to know something in one show, you have to go and buy a completley unreleated ova or track down one of his old one shot stories. It just doesn't click right. The Yamato, which was it's own separate thing, is now part of the GE 999 universe in the new manga.
And a number of Matsumoto's works remain untranslated in english, so many of the cross references seem out of place. I think Matsumoto would have been better off if he just left GE999 and Harlock as his only connected works. |

I think the problem with his latern work is he tried to dumb it down for a younger generation. (See Maetel Legend.) Anyway, I just want The Cockpit manga to be in English.

That'd be cool if they did release Captain Harlock mang in the US, the kids that are new to manga should be able to read it (though I didn't get a chance to watch the anime
 ).
