Is it just me or did they really take some liberties to lean towards a far more depressing version of Ayu's intro talk? I'd have to go back and delve word-for-word to be sure, but it sounded WAY more emo than I remember.

The general Ayu intro is usually somber (i.e. emo), and the voice actor isn't absolutely horrible. The lack of decent quality checking and most any form of sound direction in the U.S. anime dubbing industry still leaves me irate, however. Yes, I am referring to the mispronunciation of "Haruhi," and its lack of correction in this case. Also, $30 for DVD 1 with a runtime of 100 min.? If they're trying to sell this to me with questionable marketing and, to me, nearly outrageous prices, they had better be doing a superb job with it.

On a side-note, I've already been buying Air in support for more such releases of similar anime with varying satisfaction, in case somebody pegs me as one of those guys that just whines for reasons not to buy things. This is the first time I have actually purchased anime with the intention of providing "support for sales figures." I really want to own Kanon, however ADV more-so seems intent to cause my resolve to deviate.

It was going along fine, Ayu sounded decent, then the male narrator kicked in and it all came to a screeching halt. The lines they gave him were totally cheesy and overdone, and he couldn't pronounce 'Haruhi' if his life depended on it. Rolling Eyes

The end of the trailer had several spoilers in it, including footage from the final episode. It also lacked scenes with the girls other than Ayu. I think that the creditless OP would've worked better as a trailer, since it does a good job of showing everybody's place in the series.

I am not surprised at the price one bit. The show is for a niche audience, and it's a really tough sell. There is not a big audience for "slow-paced character study ero-game adaptations" whether they're made by KyoAni or not.

If you wanted to import the series from Japan, you'd be paying like $50-$60 per DVD for discs with 75 minute runtimes, so I'm not complaining.

Care to explain why it fails so bad? You know, since the Rules of this site don't allow one-liners?

Yeah, the male narration was a bit cheesy, but...

Question: How many times is the name "Haruhi" actually spoken within the series? Do we really need to worry about it?

$29.98 is only the suggested retail price...I'm sure it'll be possible to find it for around $20. TRSI has the pre-order up for $22.49, or $20.24 with the Got Anime discount. The $29.98 price point is pretty common for new-release anime DVDs, so it's not like ADV is suddenly deviating from the norm to rip us off.

And yeah, the Ayu intros are supposed to be emo to the max (and they get even more so if you've seen the whole series), so I think they captured that aspect pretty well. Brittney Karbowski's played a lot of silly/hyper girls in the past (like Himeko in Paniponi Dash and Mone in Yumeria), but I think she'll do well in this role -- much like the series itself, it's part silly, part serious. ADV's labeled this under Comedy/Romantic Comedy on their site, but some may feel deceived as the later volumes roll in.

Oh yes, Kanon also represents yet another installment of "The Chris Patton and Greg Ayres Show," where Patton plays the leading man and G. Ayres plays the semi-comedic sidekick! I couldn't call up all of them with ANN's comparison (since it only works for the few shows were Patton was credited as "Christopher), but other installments include Welcome to the NHK!, Nanaka 6/17, Ghost Stories, Full Metal Panic!, Super Gals, and maybe E'S Otherwise and a few others I haven't seen. Nothing wrong with it of course; it's just interesting that ADV uses the same casting for the same character dynamic so often.

Yeah, the dubbing once again is question. Actually in my words, it "sucks." But what else is new?

I'm going to buy it like I bought the other 150+ R1 DVDs I own. I buy it because people were always going about how "Air" and "Kanon" is for niche markets and they'll never get released or make any money. Well, I intend to show my support for what I love...

The only reason why I buy R1 is because it's cheaper than R2, has more episodes, and contain subtitles. Dubbing? Twisted Evil I never listen to that stuff...

*no need to quote entire post*~Zalis
It fails because the voice actors will probably mispronounce the names, that ADV will probably use the same shitty voice actors they always use, that the narrator fucked up...

"Probably"...? So, because these might happen, then it is automatically a failure? Even if it turns out good, or even great? Not that voice acting has anything to do with the series, there's always a sub track. I just watched the entire series and I'm definitely going to buy the DVDs regardless of any mispronounced names, voice actors, etc. I will probably watch the entire thing again dubbed because AIR's is so great. I liked Ayu's voice but from what we saw of some of the characers in AIR I'm sure this will fail.

Hey, Comedy Captain, we don't do the "tired catchphrases" thing here so just keep the lame-ass one-liners to yourself unless you have something useful to add, OK?

I have to agree. I want to own the series and would still want to even if this was a sub-only release. Considering the landmine of "uguu's" and "auu's" the dub could end up being horrendous. Then again, it could be perfect, but that won't impact my decision to buy it.
